TN license question

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

I am unemployed and have been for a while. I am diligently looking for a job without luck. My LPN license expires the end of this month and I simply don't have $100 laying around to send them to renew it! What will happen? Will I lose my license? How will i get a nursing job without.it? What will I have to do to get it back?

You can't work as a nurse without a license. See if you can put the license on inactive status. Wow my state is $200 to renew.

Yes, I know. I have been licensed since 1990. I am just wondering what will happen the end of the month when it expires because paying the $100 would take food out of my children's mouths and cause our electricity to be turned off. Am I penalized for it becoming inactive?

Depends on how long you are inactive. Some states charge more when you do renew. Some make you do extra CEUS. Some require refresher courses. Check with your BON before the renewal date passes.

In my state it's more relevant whether you voluntarily inactivate prior to expiration rather than let expire. Some states have. "Volunteer license" no charge for license but cannot be paid as a nurse until pay renewal fee. Can work as a nurse volunteer in clinic or school.

Try workforce development they may be willing/able to help with your renewal fees as that's much less than paying for new training.

In my state you can hold your license in an inactive status (lower fee) for a period of four years before they make you jump through hoops to get it back. You want to find out from your Board what the rules are so you don't put yourself in an even worse position than taking the money needed to renew it now. You also need to factor in this: if you inactivate your license at a lower fee, say $75 now, then fourteen months from now, reactivate it, the fee will be at least the original $100, it may be more. So, by inactivating your license, you are placing yourself in a situation where you can't work (non-active license) and creating a bigger bill down the road. It is probably in your best interest to just bite the bullet for the $100 fee now. Good luck.

Yes I agree, in nursing school our teachers drilled it in our brain to not forget to renew your license... Can you possibly borrow the money from a family member? It's much easier to just renew than to deal with rendering your license non active.. Hope it works out for you!

Have you tried contacting the Board of Nursing and discussing your situation. They may be able to offer a solution, and you never know they could direct you to companies needing jobs. I'm an LPN in TN and there are over 100 jobs currently posted in the Nashville region, where are you located?
