Seeking Correctional (LVN) Nursing Information

by NeonateLVN Premium Member

Hello to all fellow nurses!
I just received my LVN license this month (january 8th, 2009-yay!) and have found correctional nursing interesting. My grandfather retired as a CO at Rikers Island in NY. I live in central Texas in a military community(Fort Hood). I would like to know have any of you ever worked or work now, in a correctional facility, and if so, how is it-as far as skill experience, benefits and pay, and safety(i'm a female) I do have past medical experience-I was an Army medic, phlebotomist, I also have worked as a medical assistant and nursing assistant. I have an interview Feb 9th of 2009!! I applied for the part time and the prn positions because I'm taking online courses for prerequisites for BSN...
Any information would be excellent.
thank you!!
Kim

there is a correctional nurses forum on these boards. Try posting there, I am sure you would have lots of wonderful, informative responses!! Good luck in your interview!

My sister has been an LPN at a male max prison for 13 yrs and all she does is pass out meds...thier job is restricted at correctional setting. Mainly I think because I heard its real easy to lose your license there.

I should say that would vary from state to state and facility to facility. Check the correctional nursing forum. There are many threads there about this topic. It seems like you have good background skills. Good luck let the corrections forum know how it goes.
