School Nurse?

I graduate in January 2006 from LPN school and I was interested in becoming a school nurse. I wanted to know is it possible to be a school nurse as a LPN or do I have to get my RN first which I am also planning on pursuing. If I can work as a LPN school nurse what is the process as far as applying?

To answer your question, I have never seen an LPN employed as a school nurse. It's unlikely because LPNs are not considered 'independent practitioners'; thus, they need to work under the direct or indirect supervision of an RN or physician wherever they are employed.

I have, however, seen LPNs employed as public health nurses in county-run clinics.

I worked at several schools as a "school nurse"...most of the time it was shadowing a high risk student who had seizures. I also did feeding tubes, passed meds, and helped them with their classes. Special education classes/schools always hire a lot of LVNs. I loved it!

I just graduated in Dec. 05 and am currently working in a privately run, residential school as a school nurse. I work with 3 other LPN's at one time and we are under the direction of a RN. I am loving it. So yes, there are opportunities out there for LPN's to work as a nurse in a school setting, but you must be under the direction of an RN. Good luck to you. What state do you reside in?
