Question for all nurses.

Question for all nurses. How long would you recommend staying at a job before leaving. I've been a new nurse since october at a LTC and I'm already getting sick of the job. I'm dragging my feet to go to work each day. Around the clock pushing med cart, doing dressing changes, dealing with GNA's that don't want to work, but want to get paid, resident problems, and the list goes on.I don't exactly know if I need a change in environment or a change in career. I just don't feel fulfilled. I don't know how long I'm gonna last

Leave if you're unhappy. You're not doing anyone a favor by arriving daily to a workplace which you dislike, only to perform the same old duties you dislike, with coworkers whom you dislike. You appear to be caught in the nursing home vortex.

However, be assured you have another job lined up before you resign from your current gig. In addition, be cognizant that the grass might not always be greener at another place of employment. You might encounter the same old issues. Good luck to you.

I agree, if you are unhappy it is time to find another job. Don't give up on nursing all together!! I was in LTC for 18 years and finally got burnt out. I am now in home health and wouldn't trade it for anything!! I LOVE my job and that is what matters!! Find a different specialty that will make you happy!! Good luck!

Thanks for your reply. I REALLY don't want to give up on nursing all together, but it's just the work and hardache that comes with it that's making me sick. I've even contemplated on starting a new career altogether just to keep from being burned out. I know I'm new to this nursing thing, but I don't want to be like some nurses who are just miserable and are there just because they need to pay bills. So I think your right, I just have to find my nitch. How is psych nursing like? It's something that I've been thinking about. Also, how's home health?

josinda....i wrote a post asking that same question......i am getting so i dont like to go in to work....not knowing what to expect when i get there.....not knowing if i am going to be mandated to stay if someone calls in.....not knowing who is going to be in a bad mood or a good mood......not knowing if this one very lazy gal will be there which puts everyone in a very megative mood....i work in a house with 12 medically frail mentally retarded individuals....i love them, and my co-workers....i get along with everyone from all shifts....in fact people from each shift have asked me to come work on their shift ful time....i am only PT and like it that way.....but the morlae is so low....when we work there are only 4 or 5 of us....and we do it all.....from ADLS to laundry and we have no CNAs...we all all lpns.....one RN in the office who does most of the paper work and is there if we need her....she does help when we are really in a pinch....but there is one worker who will sit...sit for hours.....sit in the kitchen and sits int he living rooms watching movies.....we have a one on one man so we all take turn wtaching him....BUT when we are with him one is suppose to go around and get vitals...or do some laundry.....when we are really short we bring him in the rooms with us to get people out of bed or in or to change them....none of our people walk,or eat by mouth....they are all hoyer lifts......it is a state job, good pay, good benefits.....but enough is enough.....so much back stabbing....so much drama....it is crazy.....i laugh.....i dont talk about others...i am a hard worker and love my people to death.....just sick of the others who take advantage of the states money....so many call ins.....when one does call in...holy man...it is a scramble to get coverage......someone usually gets mandated....
i was a stay at home mom for 20 yrs...always wanted to be a nurse...went to school last yr....and became one....this is my first job.....so this working out of home is new to me.....but i love it...working that is...guess i am not use to the drama...hehe.......i dont have to work if i dont want to...i choose and chose to go back.....i am looking around for another job....i also have a degree in early childhood......and have an interview tomorrow with a county agency for handicappped preschoolers....i think that would be cool.....the pay is much lower, but is it full time...m-fr...6hrs aday.....and it follows the school schedule with summers off....cool eh? they want an RN tho.....but i did get an interview....will try my best to win them over.....good luck to you...i know what you are going thru......
