PICC Line

by DON40TX

I need help. Does anybody know if LVNs are allowed to flush and care for PICC lines in the Long Term Care setting?

I suspect that they can't. I have a port for chemotherapy, which is similar to a PICC & only RNs can flush it.
I'm not a LTC resident but I doubt if that makes any difference either. You're dealing with Heparin when it's flushed, right?

In states where I've worked LPNs can care for PICC lines. We do dressing changes, flushes, IV therapy. Find out from your state and what your facility allows.

In the State of Florida....as long as you are IV certified with a central line class you are able to flush and care for all type of line, including.........Ports, PICCS, Mids Hickmans, CVPs.
You must check with your BON for that answer.

Yes, it is heparin which is why I do not think that they can flush but wanted a second opinion. Thank you very much.

Hi
In Illinois the new state law requires RNs to flush or change dressing, we can not touch it. That changed this year,LPN used to be able if IV certified. I helped our DON remove one yesterday, but I couldn't do anything else with it. I think it depends on the state, just make sure that it is in your scope, because you will be in trouble if you cann't, not the facility.
