On Call

So, I'm a new grad, and you what that is like these day trying to get a job.

Anyways I've been offered an "On Call" position at a local SNF. I am heistant about it, but The DON told me that 75% of the "on calls", end up in full/part time positions after a couple months.

So my question is, since right now this is an "employers market" do you think that places are hiring "on calls" to test new nurses out who they don't want to fully commit to until they see their performance?

It seems like about 75% of the jobs that I personally have been looking at, are for "On Call".

I think I am going to take it, because right now, i need anything to gain experience. I also have the best boss in the world at my other job that is going to be really flexible with my schedule! I feel things are looking up!

Well, the way I see it being "on call" is better than not being employed in nursing and even better yet than being unemployed. Go for it, but continue your search for a full time nursing job. But remember to keep your head low when you go in to do on call shifts. Your co-workers may not be very helpful and you can expect a difficult shift which will be enhanced by the fact that you won't be very familiar at all with the territory. Be all eyes and ears and try to get as much done as you can under the circumstances. Good luck.

You just made me nervous Caliotter!! Well, I just need to buckle down and get experience. That's pretty much all I need with like the 100 jobs that turned me down. ..They are going to give me a week worth of orientation, so hopefully I won't get to lost when I start, and on top of that it is a really SMALL place! Wish me luck! I need it.

Hello, I have the same situation and I think that's the new 90 day probationary type period to be PRN. I was skeptical too about committing to be on call, but the place that I am going to work at is really a quality top of the line SNF. I don't want to lose my license that I have worked so very hard to get. I like this place I feel that it reflects who I am and would be very beneficial to begin my career right now. No one wants to hire new grads and if they do they don't pay much. This place offered me 17.50 due to the fact that I am IV certified and it's tough landing a job in Florida these days as a LPN. I have officially been a nurse as of today for a whole month. I am a little nervous yet eager. Good luck to us all and your right I'd rather be on call than unemployed.
