Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

I need help!!! I recieved my LVN in Texas in October 2009, Moved to Grand County in Colorado, applied and recieved my LPN in Colorado in February 2010. Nobody in this county will hire an LPN. There are lots of jobs for CNAs and RNs but nothing for LPNs for unless I travel 200- 250 miles.

Am I only one with this problem?

I mean I feel like by the time I actually get a nursing job I will have forgotten anything I learned in nursing school.

I feel your pain. I've been an LPN for 16 years, I live in Northern Virginia, one of the fastest, richest counties on the east coast. The LPN is being phased out and they are using nurse assistants and training them to do our job minus the theory part. very very dangerous and cheap for the powers that be. Take my advice, go forward and get your RN, do not waste one minite being an LPN, you will fight for your respect every day of your life and they're are no jobs for us. I don't care what anyone says, it sucks to be an LPN in this medical system we have, no matter how good you are at it.

Specializes in Mother-Baby, Rehab, Hospice, Memory Care.

Sorry for your job search troubles. Did you research the job market there before you moved?

Don't give up spent 4 months getting rejected, but found a PRN position that turned full time this month!!! Happy thoughts keep looking and go for that RN!

Come to New Orleans!!! One of the biggest hospitals in town are "Letting GO" of all their aids/PCT/PCA's and hiring many LPN's and new RN Graduates as nurse protoges' (RN's without the ability to do all RN duties but have passed boards) and RN's and changing the nursing model to be a team approach with an RN, LPN's and RN Proteges' being called Care Partners. They are doing this at all their hospital facilities. More qualified worker at lower pay! It is all about money! This should be an interesting change. Only time will see how this goes!:clown:

An RN protege yeah?! They sure do come up with the names to attempt to sugarcoat the facts, don't they! :lol2:

LTC facilities and other places need good LPNs.

Don't give up after a few months because even RN's are having a hard time finding a job.

Good luck.

I'm seeing the beginnings of this trend in my area, too. I think it's directly related to the economy/tight job market. People with more education are willing to work for less money. When I started I worked in a hospital with no aides or techs. I loved it! I never minded doing the bathing, linen changes etc. anyway, and back then, neither did the RNs.

To the OP- Grand County is a lovely area high in the Rocky Mountains with relatively few people, and seasonal fluctuations in population. It's just a fact of life that these areas have very few jobs. I would suggest posting in the Colorado forum to get some ideas. Best of luck to you! :)

Its that way here too-the local hospital now only employs CNAs and RNs,no more LPNs.The LTC market here is flooded with schools graduating more LPNs than there are jobs.

So I am back in school for my RN.

Specializes in ob/gyn med /surg.

RN protoges are usually RN students called " RN apprentices" and they are doing their training working in a hospital while in the RN program. they work with a RN and do get paid. when they graduate they are usually hired on as RN's ....

Here in Canada also, specifically Ontario. Went to a job fair recently. There were only about 8 recruiters there. The ones we spoke to either had jobs for HCA or RN's, NO RPN/LPN 's at all!!! There were asking me for my HCA certificate, as they had immediate jobs but nothing for RPN/LPN's. Unreal! I am already registered to go on and take the RN route with a University here. I thought that after 3 years of part time study to get my diploma, I would be able to use it. Now I find I am going backwards with a diploma, as they are now only asking for my HCA certificate! HINDSIGHT !!!

Now, the option...another 3 years to get my degree!! Do I go on?? Will they look at my BScN the same way they look at my diploma?? I hear that alot of degree RN's are now going for their masters!! Does it end?

I know nursing is all about keeping updated, but how does one get into nursing when they keep changing the requirements!

Ahhhhhh is all I can say....

Guess, its another 3 years of schooling for me!

My sister is an LPN and she said that in New Jersey, they're phasing out all of the LPN jobs even in LTC facilities and replacing them with medtechs, which are more cost efficient for the facility, but quality of care and experience provided to patients is compromised. So, since she can not get a job, she's going back to school to get her RN. 'Looks like this is becoming a trend everywhere!!
