by land64shark Feb 18, '05My plans are to go on to an LPN to RN bridge program once I get my LPN license. Is it practical to think I would be able to work part-time as a new grad LPN while going to school? Say I only want to work one day a week or so. I'm wondering how an orientation would work for a part-timer. Seems like it would take forever that way. Would it be likely that they would want me to orient full-time for awhile? Or don't employers want part-time newly licensed LPNs?

Feb 19, '05 by Fiona59What it sounds like is you want to work as a casual. Facilities love to be able to hire casuals. I had a one week orientation on original hire. When I went to specialty units in LTC I was given an orientation shift.
You give an availability sheet with what shifts you are available for. Some weeks they will call with one shift, others every day, others nothing. There is no guaranteed income, no benefits. But if you want to work evening and weekends they will usually find you something. -
Feb 25, '05 by LadyFree28...on what program you sign up for. If the program is full-time, then part-time would be a good option. If it is part-time, maybe you can have a full time job or do the "3 -12's" or work every other weekend, etc.
It also depends on your situation, as well as the employer. Do they offer benefits and tuition bonuses for part-timers, "3-12's" people?? Before I finished my course work in LPN (2/18 grauated :hatparty: ) I also was a care tech who worked relief/causal and had no assistance from my job an relied on loans. I plan on enrolling in a LPN-BSN program of BSN program Part-time, just so I can concetrate on being a nurse as well as have my employer assist in some aid to help me continue my pursuit in my career. - Feb 25, '05 by land64sharkActually, I'm not concerned with any of that. I don't "have" to work while I go to school. I just want to get my feet wet. One day a week would be fine with me. I just want to know how a new grad gets oriented only working one day a week.
