New Grad looking for a job in the south bay.

by jth5148

Hello everyone my name is Jay and I am new to allnurses. I decided to become a member because of all the positive feedback I have read in other post. I recieved my LVN license in September and have had trouble finding a job that doesn't require at least a years worth of experience. I live in San Jose and am willing to work in any field of nursing presented to me. I would appreciate feedback anyone has for me. Thanx and I look forward to hearing from all of you.

Where are you applying? I'm in the East Bay and getting worried there won't be any jobs once I get my license (awaiting my ATT).

I have applied everywhere possible, hospitals, long term facilities, hospice, med. offices, VA (currently on Hiring freeze), it isn't very positive out there but there has to be something somewhere.

How far are you willing to commute? I recall someone else was on this board (also in your area) a few months ago that was in your area that was also having a hard time finding a job. I don't have any advice other than relocating. I'll be in the same position as you in a few months. Good luck and let us know when you find something.

Have you tried calling up the various hospitals and nursing homes in the area and asking if they are hiring or are you just looking at help wanted ads? Also, I think the commuting idea is a good one, I am going to be job hunting soon after I take the boards and I am willing to commute for my first job.

Hi Shawn, I finally got a job after 8 months of looking and of course after being hired I started recieving more job offers, which makes me feel confident about the market. The pay here in the bay area is one of the highest in the nation i believe. If you are interested i Palo Alto the VA has a huge facility their and thats where i would apply, the pay is good and the benefits and retirement are the best. Good luck

Jay,

Thankyou so much for the info. I really appreciate it. Thats very reassuring to hear your doing well and feeling optimistic about the job market and all.

May I ask what LPNs stand to make at the VA or LTC hospitals?? is the salary adjusted for cost of living??

According to salary.com RNs make tons more in the bay area but LPNs just make a bit more compared to Chicago. The info on the blogs seems to confirm this (22-26 hr). Does that seem right?

Shawn
