LPN-to-RN Programs

Hi All,

When I took my LVN program at Unitek College in Sacramento, CA, all of the pre-req classes were included in the actual program.

During my visit to Western Career College in Sacramento today, the advisor told me it would take me SIXTEEN months to fulfill the prerequiste classes BEFORE I could take the EIGHT month RN step up program (and I only need the CHEM, MICRO and A/P classes!)

Are there any other alternatives? I'd be willing to relocate, but at 47 years of age, time is definitely NOT on my side. I'd like to find a program that has all of this rolled into one big ball. Community college pre-req programs in my area fill up FAST, so there is no guarantee that I could pick up these programs in a hurry here either.

I really could use your collective advice. My classmate ran off to TEXAS to get into her RN program. I'm thinking of doing the same if things do not improve in my area (Sacramento, California).

Appreciate all the feedback (and BOY, do I need it!)

Best regards,

Michael

There's a private LPN-to-RN program located in Oklahoma City. The only prerequisite is that you must possess a valid Oklahoma LPN license, which is fairly easy to obtain. All of the classes are rolled into the program, such as the A&P, Micro, and so forth.

Send me a private message if you'd like more information.

the hospital that hired me for, is putting LPNs thru this program(LPN-RN) - they said it is very good and the nurses all seem to like it. it is all done online. may be another alternative for you.

i too do not have time on my side - 46 and just now going to school for LPN, but i plan on doing this program thru the hospital as soon as i obtain my license. can't hurt to check it out

Excelsior College RN is not accepted in California and some states have stipulations about EC. Please check with your state BON first before starting taking exams at Excelsior College.

Don't be sorry. You didn't say anything wrong. What I said was meant to be just a warning. Actually, Excelsior is great and I am in the program. I just enrolled last month.

Actually, there is supposed to be a complicated way for Excelsior graduates to get a CA license on a case by case basis by putting forth paid RN experience from another state and getting a license by endorsement. As with all case by case situations, not something that one should count on.

You should contact an advisor at WGU, www.wgu.edu, and find out if they are expanding their BSN program to northern CA. Or, you could complete your prerequisites, enter their program and finish up if you can move to the SoCal area for the period of time you need to complete your practicums. Worth a thought.

Hey Michael...

Fellow Unitek classmate! Its me, Leslie! =]

i know what you are going through, because i too am going through the same thing. i saw you talking to mrs. christman today, so i didnt want to interrupt and say hello! =/ sorry.

anywho -- i dont know what to tell you. i might have to go through a vocational school as well, if i dont get back into solanos program. luckily for me, i already took all the prerequisite classes. they are way TOUGH from what we did at unitek -- and trust me i know. the problem with me is that my gpa is low and i need a school that will take my overall rather than my gpa! [SOLANO DOES -- but i already went through their program and failed out -- thats why i needed the LVN as a stepping stone. so HOPEFULLY i get back in.]

otherwise, i HOPE you find something. i know a lot of our classmates are doing the INDIANA STATE UNIVERSITY thing...through college network. i didnt like the guy that was trying to PITCH the option to me. just seems fishy. he was making me RETAKE classes that ive already taken. but take that into consideration...it covers all your prerequisites and its a straight shot to BSN. think about it! this is your future!

take care and let me know what you end up doing! congratulations for passing the boards! woot to us!

Florida's only stipulation for Excelsior is that you must've been an LPN at the time of application. Excelsior has all special stipulations for the different states listed on their website.
