Leagally what am I allowed to dO?

Hi, I am a new LPN in the state of Fla. I have not yet taken the IV Certification class and am currently orientating on the Med/Surg floor. I have asked different nurses on the floor this question and have gotten different stories. I want to know am I allowed to administer IV drugs through and IV site or PICC line without haveing taken the certifiaction class? Some say yes and some say no. I know what I am comfortable doing and my nurse manager is brand new and I just want to know so I can protect my license and not go outside of it. It would be easy to see what hospital policy is, but sometimes that isn't always clear or in the my best interest either. Experinced nurses please tell me. Thanks!

This is a scope of practice issue and is best directed to your board of nursing.

Generally, I'd say, when in doubt, back out and get someone experienced to do the task. Better to protect your patient and your license than go out on a limb you are unsure of.

Good luck. Good question!
