Iv Certification...

by Jen_25

Hey everyone.. I just passed the the NCLEX on Thursday and I'm planning on getting my IV certification. Is it worth having? Do you get paid more if you have the certification? Please advise...

Congratulations.

Yes it is worth having. Hospitals won't hire you without it. I'm not sure if in other facilities you will get paid more or not, but it's worth having anyway. Get it out of the way now.

I don't think you will get paid more to have it but alot of places will not hire you if you don't have it.

Thanks!.. Your right tweety..I should get it out the way now before I get very busy with work and school.
I'm in Miami, FL and a lot of the LTC here doesn't really require. I'm being hired as a Lead LPN in an ALF. And still working part-time at my current job(LTC). They don't really require it. Some of my classmates work for a hospital and everytime an IV needs to be inserted. The charge nurse does it..

Well, you never know when you want to switch jobs. Plus LPN to RN programs might require it as well.

Good luck and congratulations on passing!

Congrats Jen......Yes, get it. I worked in a LTC facility that is shifting over to acute/rehab care. This is happening a lot as this is were the money is for most LTC facilities. In these type of facilities, you may be the charge nurse and need to know how to do this. In our area of Charleston S.C. I know of at least 5 LTC facilities who will address this on hire as far as wages are concerned. They have had to send staff to local colleges for this training at their expense and as you know the turnover in these facilities is high. It is to their advantage to hire nurses already trained. Getting that training now is a win/win situation for both you and you future employer.

I wouldn't think you would need it in a ALF, but I would definitely get the cert. In LTC, I use my IV skills a lot, although I have not put any IV's in. I just have the practice. I don't want to use my patients as my Guinea pigs.LOL BUt I am good with the pumps, etc. I know how to do IVs, picc lines, TPN, etc. I am going to do another class since it's been a while. No, I don't make more, BUT it makes YOU more valuble.

I earn absolutely no extra money for possessing certification in IV therapy.
