Wow, a lot of hear say, assumptions, conclusions, and pot stirring. How would I handle this info? I certainly would not play messenger boy or detective for someone else. If the other nurse is, as you say, legit, then she needs to do the reporting. If she will not and you are truly concerned, you can relay that another staff member has made troublesome statements and the DON can take it from there.

Experience tells me that the OP does have an issue to be concerned with. Unfortunately, situations like this can be sticky. You are not sure if the DON is aware, there is a chance that the nurse that may be using drugs might blame it on another nurse, thus, putting the innocent person's license and life in jeopardy and even set up for harassment.

For now, I would privately document the activity to see if there is a pattern, be cognizant of the personalities of the people in power (ie...is the nursing supervisor or DON supporting this behavior...sometimes this HAS happened) and then, sleep on it with prayer (or whatever you resort to for clarity). For now, let's support the OP and pray for the best outcome.

She hasnt been reported to the BON that I know of. Nothing is listed publicly on the site. I have never seen a nurse be reported to the board where I work...even ones that absolutely have no right at all to practice...I caught a nurse a few yrs ago stealing percocets..she even admitted it and kept her job for several months after the fact. Still has a license. Never got turned over to the board. A friend of mine worked at a different facility and made a med error with lovenox..she signed for it and it wasnt available..but she made the mistake of forgetting to circle it on the mar...she got turned in and had to be on probation and restrictions from the board plus pay a 500.00 fine and take a class. Part of me thinks that even if I do bring this to the boss's attn at some point..she wont do anything about it anyways. We have a night nurse who was caught sleeping several times and 4 different aides reported it....the don has never even said a word to her about it. She just let it go. Yet she asked me about it? I dont even work that shift so I wouldnt have known about it anyways. Too much gets brushed under the rug. I guess when the time is right it will come to light..and yes...you are right...I wouldnt want someone hungover or under the influence of anything taking care of my loved one.
