How to Happy Job Hunt

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

To begin, Im not even sure I did my resume correctly, is there a special way nurses do their resume? Anyway, I got a book to see how nurses do their resume. Finished my 'nurse resume' and proceeded to go 'job hunt'.

First place I went I had the rudest receptionist ever. It was literally like pulling teeth to get anything out of her........ like getting her to take my resume. All she kept saying was, we're not hiring any nurses. This was in LTC. Next a hospital, the administrator there tells me Im wasting my time and why dont I go back to school for my RN. Great...this right after she asks if Im a new grad. Then she tells me about a job fair they are having but follows this up with "dont bother coming" because she adds if we were to consider you, we want you to have one or two years experience. "You have to pay your dues you know" she adds finally. I went one other place to which the receptionist was polite and kindly told me they werent hiring.

Am I stupid or what, why didnt I even ask for a job applicaton to fill out. No one offered me that. I havent looked for a job in well.... in something like a hundred years. Anyway after all that, I stayed home today and did nothing. I know this isnt good but tomorrow is another day. I will begin my hunt again until I get something. Im confident I will but I just did not expect to hear the discouragement out there.

How to happy job hunt??? The title of this thread should probably be, Happy Job Hunting NOT!!! Good luck to everyone else that is just starting to job hunt.

Have you tried any of the units where you did clinicals in school? That is always a great place especially if you made a good impression on any of the floor nurses. Imo face time is really important and I would definitely ask the snarky receptionists for an application and follow up with a call to the actual nursing supervisor to ask for an interview. Whats to say that someone didn't quit or get fired 5 minutes after you left? They would have no way of contacting you. HR people can be a blessing or a curse, imo, and I always prefer to go right to the unit staff if possible. Do not give up. Good luck.

Thank you so much. Yesterday was a better day as I knew what to expect. I even went back to that place w/the snarly receptionist...of course she didnt remember me. I stood tall and got that long application. I guess it will take a minute to get a job.

Are you an RN or LPN new grad? I'm a new grad RN and there's no shortage of hospitals, LTC, and other facilities in my area that want to hire new grads! I'm surprised you didn't have any job offers before graduating.

Im an LPN new grad. For most of my friends, it took 2/3 months and that after being in serious, persistent pursuit. I just started looking... No one I know was given a job offer before graduating, that must be great.

Well, still, with being an LPN, have you looked at psych, and outpt areas? In my area, besides LTC, this is where alot of LPN's get hired. Also, for some reason, alot of the hospitals are hiring LPN's to work in a limited capacity as a respitory therapist. Does your school have a department that helps with job placement?

My school does not help in any way with job placement. I definitely will consider working in psych...(what is outpt?) In my area, Im told, that hospitals are hiring a limited number of LPNs if any at all and you must have experience. I was told this by an particular hospital administrator or hr administrator when I went to apply. I have also been thinking about rehab. A problem I ran into there was that they were limiting the positions to those with experience.

Outpt=outpatient, such as homes for the mentally disabled, doctor's offices, clinics, LTC, etc.

It's a real bummer that your school will help you get your training, but then will not help with job placement.

Im happy hunting and Im so dizzy I mean busy going here and there. I found out that the jobs arent always listed. The ones that are get so flooded with applications..... Instead you go to a place, fill out an appl and talk to people there about openings. I got my first interview this way on the spot. She (DON) was iffy about hiring me because im 'brand new'. So far, everyone's been nice except that first place I went to. Im just so tired starting out early each morning and finishing late afternoon and going to work in between ((long sigh))). Went to a job fair that I felt was a waste of time.. I probably should give it more time. Ive read in the First Year nursing area that it takes about a month to get a job (mostly). Oh I fit in a bite to eat on the run. Gotta run now to happy job hunt ...................

girl...let me tell you, I'm a new grad and had the same experience. All they want to know is "are you a new grad?" and if you are....they dare not give a an application. I had filled out 9 applications not including the ones online. Everyone keeps telling me "you need at least one year of experience". I don't understand these people, they say their's a nursing shortage, but they don't want to hire new grads, WHY? Anywayz, I finally found a job who actually TRAIN new grads, PRAISE THE LORD. And you know, I found this place by accident. I got lost looking for another nursing facility and found this nursing facility. When I tell you god makes a way, he truely makes a way. Don't be discouraged, it's only a matter of time before that jobs comes knocking. I search for over a month before I finally found one. Yours too is comming.

I suppose I had almost the opposite experience when applying for jobs in LTC as a a new grad. I would search the online classifieds and then call the number that they listed to find out when was a good time to fill out an application. Almost always the receptionist would transfer my call to the hiring person and I would come and get an on the spot interview. Basically in my area they just want a license and a pulse in most LTC facilities. I was a bit scared off at places that offered me a job without evening reviewing my resume. However, most hospitals are more picky when it comes to hiring and the process takes much longer. After one year experience in nursing homes, I was hired at a hospital.

Both of you have given me good ideas. Today was like I said just go to a place. They called me back today, so I now have interviews to go on. The one obviously couldnt have checked anything, the other was asking about my references...talked about checking my b/g so it is going good for having looked a week and a half. I really didnt know how to go about it and like I said you both have given me good ideas. I will continue to happy job hunt until I have something.
