Great provider...mean to work under

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

I recently started working under a PA as a LPN. I was not a fresh grad but rather have lots of experience in the LTC setting. Prior to taking this position this PA was my primary provider. Whenever I had an appt with her she was kind, thoughtful and thorough. So I was very excited when I got the job, I knew that her nurse turn over rate was higher than average, I just figured they thought clinic nursing wasn't for them. Well I have been there for over a month and during that time the other clinic nurses have told me to be prepared because she's a miserable person(....wait, what? She's always been so awesome!?). Surely enough I have been working under her for two weeks and it has begun....(ex. 1) I sent her a computer msg at the request from a neighboring facility surgical RN To which I was told...." You know what, I find it really annoying that you would send me this, it's just so annoying...." So I apologized and walked away. I initially thought 'well, she just got back from PTO, she's got a pile of papers on her desk, it probably was a little annoying' although she could've handled it better...then a few days later I had a pt come into the clinic with out an appt talking about something I had no idea about, stating that she spoke with someone at the clinic last night and so on, there was no note or charting, so I sent my provider a direct message through the computer system stating.." This pt is here, she states she will return this afternoon when you are in office, I am unaware of what she is trying to explain to me d/t some tx or testing she was told she would be getting this upcoming week. Please let me know how you'd like me to proceed." After rooming the first patient of the day my provider pulled me into her office stating..."this makes you look stupid, it's stupid, to say you are 'unaware' ugh, don't send me messages like this." I apologize stating that I wouldn't make that mistake again and walked away. I felt so embarrassed, and I shouldn't have, so know I'm an grey that I allowed her to let me feel this way. I had another nurse in the hall hear the whole thing. So I'm leaving, these snarky comments in less than two weeks, am I wrong to think this won't progress? She has been reported by other nurses I guess but the management in the clinic doesn't care bc it's hard to get providers there. (Forgive typos, I had to do this on a tablet)

I'm an LPN, and had a similar situation like yours in 2011. I feel for you... I took a job for a new private specialty practice in my rural area then. I needed a part time job, because I'm a stay at home mom. The job seemed awesome. I was hired out of 14 other LPN & MA applicants. There was one other LPN working there, and the two doctors that worked there seemed so nice at my interview. The doctors said they weren't seeing too many patients yet, as the practice was new. They also said they would work with my schedule as I'm a mom. They also said I would really enjoy working there.

This place was anything but what they said!!! It was a nightmare! The other LPN and I were worked to death daily! We made $9.50 an hour, seen I don't know how many patients a day, roomed patients, assisted with surgeries, cleaned the office (yes cleaned the office), sold products that were for sale there, phone triaged, cleaned surgical tools, gave injections, charted, etc., etc. The other nurse retired two months after I started there. She was near retirement anyway, and that job put her over the edge.

They then hired two other nurses there to work with me as the practice was getting busy. All three of us were YELLED at from the time the doctors came in to work in the morning, until we left. We were expected to stay back as well, although I never did. I had to pick my kids up from school which the doctors didn't like. The head doctor had severe OCD and we could do nothing right. She pouted about everything, and always tried to make us nurses feel stupid. It got so bad that I quit after about 6 months, and the other two nurses did as well. I had to get out for my sanity and blood pressure! That office has a high nurse turnover like yours. My advice is if it doesn't get better soon, find another job and leave. Don't let anyone make you feel stupid or degrade you. I currently have a PRN job as a health screener nurse and am so much happier now. Good luck!

Wow. Sounds like she's a miserable person. You're right. It probably won't get any better. Sometimes miserable people act out on those working under them. I'd find another job. No one deserves to be treated like that.

Sit her down and ask her how she wants those types of situations handle. Do not grovel or be overly apologetic. Let her know that you are happy to do things how they work best for her, but she needs to let you know how that is. Be direct an unemotional. Hard, but worth it!

Unfortunately it has done no good. She is accountable to no one because she is a: never been married woman over fifty who has no kids. She communicates well with her patients which us why she is an awesome provider. She just takes her misery out on others with belittlement. It's okay, I put my notice in at the facility, they chose to release me same day quote "we respect and believe that you are a good nurse but we feel there is no purpose to further training you". I took a job with more pay, less hours and they will 100% be willing to work around my schedule for school. Plus, I worked for this company before, stayed on flex during thus time and today they (HR and the CEO) said, "we are SO Excited to have you back, Welcome Home!" Today was a happy day. I was initially offended by the quick departure but it's a month of less ridicule and the other facility is starting me Monday...Yay, Long weekend, lol.
