Graduated LPN in 06 - Havent worked yet! Need Advice!

by bshi

Hi! I am an older stay at home mom who graduated from LPN School in 06. I worked 3 months in a doctor's office (long hours and low pay) and realized my kids still needed me at home and resigned from the job. Now, 2 years later, I'm ready to resume my nursing career. My question is how do I explain this to potential employers? Also, since its been 2 years, how can I "brush up" on my skills? Thanks!

Honesty is the best policy. If you interview with a facility who has any understanding of family first, then they will understand and be willing to be patient as you get your feet wet again. I would also brush up on skills according to what area you want to work in. If your thing is peds, then pull out the old peds book and review. If it's geriatrics, review assessments and go over your geriatric book and so on. Good Luck and remember just be honest. Also, you might want to reassure during the interview that you are now ready to work and that your family will always come first, but they do not need you full time now. That would be the only thing as an employer I would be concerned about, is that you wouldn't be staying. I wish you the best in your search!!!!

I agree... I'd read up on areas you're hoping to be hired in. Pre arrange childcare if needed. Honesty always rings true.

Is your license still active or inactive? Most have to be one or the other. You have to work so many hours to keep a active license, or pay a one time fee to go in-active. You may want to check up on that.
