    Hello. Can any experienced nurses tell me if an LPN can work 2 double shifts on Saturday and Sunday only? Or 20 hours on Saturday, and 20 hours on Sunday? Just wondering if such a shift or schedule exists. I plan on going for LPN to RN to BSN, and am trying to figure out how mesh work hours and school hours.

    In Florida a lot of SNFs offer 16 hour shifts on the weekend. I believe you are not permitted to work more than 16 consecutive hours - but I'm not sure.

    Someone told me that Nurses can have that type of schedule, but they're not sure about LPN's. I don't see why not. My dream is to work those hours to continue with school. Anybody else?

    Since the 'N' in LPN stands for 'nurse,' LPNs are very much nurses.

    Anyhow, I worked 16-hour weekend doubles as an LPN/LVN at a nursing home every Saturday and Sunday while attending an RN completion program during the week.

    I worked night shifts during school full-time. Sure you fall asleep in class all the time and it's pure misery...but it can be done.

    my friend works her 20 hrs on weekends....10 hour shifts sat and sun...school during the week..and during breaks she picks up extra hrs during the week....

    LPNs are nurses, so it would make no difference if one was an RN or an LPN if they could have an exceptional schedule. As the Commuter says, what does the "N" stand for?

    It depends on the nurse manager as to what she/he is willing to give you. When I was in school full time for my BSN (which I never finished) I worked two twelves on the weekends. We had one RN work two doubles every weekend who lived about two hours away. She used to stay overnight at the hospital on the short term surgery floor that was closed on the weekends on saturday night. Most of our NAs were nursing students enrolled in full time programs and they generally worked weekends as well. If you are working, ask your nurse manager. If you are looking for jobs, ask this in an interview. Most employers will be delighted that you going to make the attempt to go back to school and should accomodate you, though there are exceptions to this rule if you have a bad nurse manager that can't think outside the box.

    You guys are right. I should have said RN, because an LPN is a nurse as well. Please don't take offense. I should have worded it better.

    But I'm glad to hear that LPNs have pretty much the same flexability as RNs. I can't wait to start schooling.


    LPNs : WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT SCHEDULE, OR WHAT SCHEDULE DID YOU WORK. HOW MUCH FLEXABILITY DID YOU HAVE?

    I did double shifts on s/s (known as baylors) and attend school during the week. I am an LPN and yes, it can be done.

    When I was in school, I worked Fri 10p-6a, sat 2p-6a, sun 2p-6a, then school m-f 0745-1445. I was a single parent of 2 toddlers, and was only able to keep up that pace for a semester. Where I work, the weekend nurses work the baylor program. They work 6a-10p sat and sun, and while it's 32 hours, so long as they work their entire shifts, they get paid for 40 hours. Have plenty of friends that work this and go to school during the week.
