Crazy Question about volunteering to get experience

I signed up for excelsior and just passed the first nursing test under the new curriculum. My problem is, in my area they don't hire unexperienced LPN's in the hospitals and the pay for LPN in the hospitals if I do get hired is about 13-14 dollars per hour. I really want to get some hospital experience and pass the CPNE next years some time. Probably the very end of next year. Has anyone ever heard of volunteering at a hospital to shadow a nurse and learn some hands on experience? I'm not sure if hospitals allow this but I would like to go for maybe 1 day a week to look over the shoulder of an RN. Who would I call within the hospital to set something like this up? or do I you think they would look at me crazy if I called to even ask?
