I am in my second semester of LPN school and I would like to know if any of you are in the hospice field. If you are how do you like it?

Hi Nicole,
I'm not one, but in the DC area I've seen employment advertisements for LPNs in hospice. Good luck to you, Jules

I have looked into hospice and that is my long term goal after getting my RN. However I do know in PA. its based on the county you want to work in. I know in Erie county you must be a RN, in Warren county you can be a LPN at least last I knew. Best of luck to you It takes a special person to be in that area of nursing.

Yes, our pallative care units are staffed by PNs. In the community it's mainly RN but in facilities its two PNs and one RN to the units I've seen.

Where I live, the vast majority of the continuous care hospice nurses are LVNs/LPNs. So, yes, there are numerous LVN hospice nurses in my city. However, most of the hospice employment advertisements prefer LVNs/LPNs with 1 year of LTC experience.

I would believe that there would be hospice cases for LPNs...they have an expected outcome and require pallitive care. I hear that my agency hires them sometimes, but I already have a home case. I'd do hospice myself!

The primary care nurse has to be a RN, as someone mentioned before a LPN can do visits or continous care. In fact the regs for continous care is a licensed nurse and most hospices want LPNS since they cost less.
