Rejection letter - what now?

Hello, everyone! I am currently at SLU, I applied and didn't make it into the nursing program for Fall 2012. I am devastated not so much because I did not get in, but because I feel I will never get in anywhere! I talked to someone in the nursing office, and they told me I didn't make it because my GPA was not high enough. My degree GPA is a 3.222. The program filled up at 3.6. Two years ago it was 3.4, and last year it was 3.5. I can't apply for Spring 2013 either because the classes I may take in the fall to boost my GPA won't count, so that's already a whole year I feel will be wasted! It's already taken 3 years to finish my pre-reqs...I'm feeling more and more like a failure. I want to transfer, but I don't know who will take me with a 2.2 cumulative GPA. I was even considering taking the LPN route at a technical/community college, and then going back to SLU for the LPN-BSN track, but every place I've spoken with only has about 20 spots and doesn't start until Fall 2013.

Only counting retake grades, I have all As and Bs, with the exception of one C. I feel like taking over classes will just be a waste of time as the admission GPA seems to keep rising every year. My son is almost a year old and I am feeling the pressure to really be able to provide for him like I want to.

I guess I just want to know if anyone out there can give me guidance on what my options are right now, I really need it!

hey keep your head up im un the same boat as you Ive been rejected so many times that tying this comment is bringing tears to my eyes. But I refuse to give up and neither should you. if all nurses out there had 4.0 gpa there wouldnt been a severe shortage of nurses. so I guess were just going to have to keep appyling to as many schools a s possible until someone takes us. Im praying for us both

------>same boat here! I have a bad couple of semester in my history due to a trauma in my life and since then I went on to graduate with honors with a 3.75 but overall I'm at a 3.01. I got a 96 on the HESI and still have been told I need to get my GPA up, it's been over a year now and I didn't bother to get on the community college wait lists for an RN program and I'm kicking myself for sure! At this point I'll take anything.

purplerose8----I also thought about doing LPN then a bridge, but none of the LPN schools around here seem to have classes that will transfer anywhere and the more research I do I realize it's just a waste of time and money.

I'm just filling up the time taking classes I would have to take once in a programs, pathophysiology, nutrition, etc. so then when I get in, I'll have that less to take and I can concentrate on the meat of the program being the nursing!

I refuse to give up!!! good luck all!

Thanks for replying.

Wow, thats disappointing to hear they likely won't transfer. You can still challenge classes or use experience, I hope. I'm going to apply to Charity and RPCC. I'll take anything too.

Did you check with ltc in Baton rouge for their lpn program? They start a new class each semester. I left to go for my BSN, but last semester I walked into the school in December and started in January. Be warned though. I didn't complete that route because their program will take 2 years to finish.

As far as transfer credits from a LPN program... Well they don't. Schools will give you between 9-12 credits for having your LPN license, but not for the classes themselves. And most of the schools around here want experience as an LPN before starting the bridge program.

I had the same problem when I was at Southeastern. I didn't even apply to their nursing program because I knew my GPA was not high enough. (MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME - PLEASE DO NOT POST NAMES OF INDIVIDUALS IN YOUR PROGRAM), the former head of the nursing program, and a family friend, informed me very politely that I should wait on applying until my GPA was higher. I felt like I was wasting time there, and I had moved back home near New Orleans and started considering other options. I decided Southeastern was totally out of the question for me. I ended up at LSU in New Orleans, and I love it. My GPA was a 3.4 for LSU because they require a lot less pre-requisite hours than Southeastern does. Most other nursing schools in the state require less pre-requisite hours than SLU. I'm not sure if LPN courses usually transfer over, like everyone else has said. BSN programs are way more advanced, so it's not likely that they'll be transferred. A friend of mine who graduated from SLU's Nursing School in December of 2010 told me she really wishes she would've gone to LSU because she thinks it would have better prepared her for the reality of nursing, but I guess it really just depends on you personally. I know LSU and ULM have some of the top NCLEX pass rates in the state, which is good. Don't give up though! It'll all work out :)

I never even considered applying to LSU, I assumed that if I wasn't good enough for SLU, LSU was out of the question. I have applied for the surgical tech program at Delgado, as well as an LPN program elsewhere, since I missed Delgado's deadline for that. I'll give LSU a shot!

Baton Rouge would be too far of a commute for me, I don't have the funds right now. Just commuting to Hammond was a strain.

LSU is definitely a great alternative option to SLU. I just graduated this month with my BSN from SLU, but there are still components of LSU's program that I wish SLU had. Aside from that, I'm still very happy with my education and experience. I have heard that they are looking into their application process and are considering adding an entrance exam and an interview to make the process more well-rounded, similar to LSU's process. They have also been talking about changing the nursing curriculum from 5 semesters to 4 semesters. I don't know if this information helps, but I just thought I'd chime in! Feel free to PM me if you have an questions!

I'm in the same boat currently I hold a 4.0 grade point average passed all generals with As and a couple of Bs and still did not get in due to past course performance. Early in my college career I withdrew from classes and even failed but retook them and passed to show them I can do it I just had a tough load at the time at a better place in my life now I am ready but I got my first rejection into an L PN program they tell me I should take more classes but I finished all generals and can't afford to take classes that don't apply to my degree so what should I do I'm feeling so discouraged b/c of my past they won't give me a chance.
