Nursing Schools

U.S.A. Louisiana

Published

Hi Everyone. I was wondering if anyone can give me any information about what nursing schools to apply to. I will be finished with all of my pre-reqs next semester and will start applying in Feb. Does anyone know anything about William Carey's program in New Orleans? I was looking at Our Lady of Holy Cross, Nicholls St, and Southern University. I am currently enrolled at Delgado but I didn't want to wait until next Jan to get into their school. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

***The application package is COMPLETE only when we have ALL of the following:

TEAS scores, application, transcripts, and minimum course requirements***

(here it indicates that AP1 is now part of the minimum requirements. When I went to get advised in March 08, they suggested I take AP1 over the summer to meet the Aug 31 deadline for Fall 09 class... which I did.)

And by transcripts they mean all officials from all non-Delgado schools. You don't need to send in an official DCC one because they can pull that themselves.. Charity is still part of Delgado.

Thanks to all for your help. The fact that LSU doesn't accept A&P from Delgado is one of the reasons why I don't think I want to go there. I don't want to take it all over again. When I was in my A&P II lab they were testing out some new curriculum in order to prepare to make the lab acceptable to LSU. I worked my butt off in that class because I took it during the summer. I have basically taken all of my pre reqs for all of the nursing schools in the area. I am kind of nervous because I was so confident that I was going to get into someones nursing school that the thought of me not being accepted never crossed my mind. I am going to remain confident and just make plans in case I don't get accepted this fall or into Charity in the spring.

I just went on the Charity site and they say that the admission deadline is

Feb. 27. I was going to take the TEAS in Feb also. So did they change it to Jan 31 and didn't change it online.

I called charity today and they said that the date they have for deadline is Jan31st so thats why i waited to to schedule my teas so i could review but their online said feb 27th thats what i went by but they changed it without changing it online she told me to call back and see if it changes but she said thats seems right about jan31 according to her paperwork seems unorganized but ill take what i can

Chandarachelle,

I'm not quite understanding your AP concerns...

If you begin Charity's RN program.. like are full blown into nasics, NAC, what have you... why would you up and switch to LSU? That would be the only event that one ought to be concerned about losing AP credits.

If you do Charity and complete your RN-ADN through them, THEN apply to LSU for your ADN-BSN transition... your AP classes WILL be used then.

Why exactly are you worried about losing ap credits?

Delgado or any other local school for this matter, will not have a comparable AP class because LSUHSC downtown has cadavers that the nursing students have access to and use for classes. UNO, DCC, OLHCC, etc.. won't get that experience for biology, nursing, pre med.. etc. That's why LSU is hardcore about their freshman BSN students taking it there. Now, RN-ADN's are considered a different story. You HAVE patient experience, you've seen a cadaver if you've worked in a hospital.. most RN's that obtain a BSN post ADN, have experience that doesn't warrant them needing a cadaver in school.

And where are you guys getting this Feb 27 from? Post a link.

As far as I've known... its been Aug 31 and Jan 31 for the their respective semesters for the past few years. Aug 31, 2008's deadline for the Fall 09 class was extended till the end of September 08 due to Gustav, etc. but thats the last extension I've known of.

If you do your PRs while you are in Charity GOOD LUCK!!! Its best to get everything out of the way before you start. I am not saying it cant be done, but if you want to keep your sanity do your PRs 1st.

I may have confused you. I was saying if I applied to LSU BSN program, I was told that they didn't accept Delgados A&P. I understand why they don't now. The link is http://www.dcc.edu/campus/charity/rnprog/appdeadline/index.html.

To follow up with the A&P discussion...

say you get your application in for Jan 31st deadline, you don't have to have your A&P I completed, but you should be enrolled to take it that semester. I agree that it will increase your chances for getting in because it adds to your "points". I applied Jan 31, 08 for Spring 09 semester and I was enrolled for A&P lab/lecture and Psyc in Spring 08. Got my acceptance letter June 08 when I was enrolled in Micro for the Summer. Last semester I finished my A&P II lec/lab and I'm good to go!!!

I think the best advice is for people to get their apps in ASAP and also enroll in their pre-reqs ASAP as well.

And regarding the ADN/BSN discussion...

I have a Bachelor's degree from LSU already but this is a career change for me. I looked into both the CARE program and the CSN program. I decided on Charity because of its reputation among nurses. Not only is it ranked among ADN programs nationwide but locally, many agree that Charity nurses are the best prepared right out of school. Since healthcare was a total career change for me from Law, I wanted to learn nursing in a hands-on approach to ensure that I developed the bed side manner and critical thinking skills I need.

I plan on going online for the BSN later but the ADN gets me into the hospital to make money and learn faster. BSN grads make only .50 cents more than ADN grads in the NO market.

So, I too am a HUGE advocate for the ADN route.

To whomever posted about Midwifery... we should talk! I think I may be interseted too. There aren't too many programs around here but I have a good friend in the Georgetown program now. What do you think our options are in NOLA for programs and then for jobs????

I got an email from the Charity school of Nursing this am and she stated that the application deadline for spring 2010 is feb 27th 09 the reason for the confusion is because the website says two different dates on the application site versus the deadline site so they cleared it up and i am finished with a&p 1 lec now enrolled in a&p lab 1 all other reqs done.

I wanted to help clear up how Charity does there point Applicant Review Form, I actually got a copy of mine when I went to Charity and the lady gave it to me to keep. This will help clear up any misinfo going around. I got in for Jan. YAY!! When I applied I DID NOT HAVE ANY AP's done to show b/c I was currently taking it when I applied. I am now finished with the exception of AP2 lec. cause the teacher I had was a real tool!! LOL I am retaking it this Jan while in Basics.YOU HAVE TO HAVE ALL LABS AND LECTS DONE BEFORE YOU GET INTO NAC 2 AT CHARITY. I have a really awesome lec. teacher at Delgado so I don't feel scared. PM me and I'll let you know who to take. There are ALOT of students who take AP while at charity, I DON'T recommend it but it does happen.
