new Tulane/OLOL accelerated students

U.S.A. Louisiana

Hey Everyone,

I just finished this program in May 2006. DO NOT GET DISCOURAGED. I have 3 kids and I did it, passed boards, and I am a working RN now. If anyone has any questions or concerns, please feel free to ask me anything about teachers, classes, what you need to know??? Good luck to everyone and remember Fundamentals, he first class in conjunction with Pharmacology covers the most information and is in my opinion the most time consuming. Just go at it full force and don't let up.

you seem to have a wealth of information. I did go on the website and i am trying to have a good sense of what I am getting myself into. It has been a long road...i thought i was going to go straight from LSU baton rouge to LSUHSC but was not accepted because I didnt finish one class by the time I turned in my application. Then I went to OLOL college for a semester. But that was way to costly and it was going to take me forever to get into the program since I was a transfer. In a last ditch effort to not waste anymore time or my TOPS i went back to LSU and decided that i would get a degree in sociology and regroup upon graduation. NOw i have a year left until I graduate and I do not want anymore delays. I really feel mature and ready to be put in a program and start a professional career so I can be INDEPENDENT.

Bit of advice. Get in touch with OLOL College and find out EXACTLY which pre-reqs you need (if you have not already done so). I had classes that I already had that they would not accept and had to take over again. That is probably the one requirement that gets people turned down; the wrong class or missing a class. They do not take substitutes or classes from certain schools.

Good luck

Landnurse,

What was your GPA entering the program and what was your final GPA? Did you study all week? Any information you have would be greatly appreciated! I am entering OLOL BR program in the Fall.

I really don't think that I want to put my GPA out there for all to see. I am sure you understand that. Lets say that it was high enough for me to get into the program, although I understand that is not the major criteria for admission.

As for studying all week; I am/was in the accelerated program which is quite different from the 2 yr. You have to study all of the time b/c you have to self-teach also. So unless you are willing to put all of your free time into this program don't do the accelerated. And that was an understatement.

Yeah I understand about the GPA. I was just trying to evaluate how hard the accl program was. Landnurse just made it seem like it was hard but do able while everyone else you see on here make it sound like 2 semesters of hell. I was just curious if GPA played on role in ppls opinion of the program. I know OLOL has a lower GPA and does not base their opinion solely on GPA like a alot of other nursing programs do.

I understand, these were concerns that I/we had when we first started the progrm. Yes it is hard, very hard. We started with 42 and graduated 23. The BR accelerated program has the same ratio. It is so hard to lose people during the year. Those who have had some type of medical job or studies do much better than those who don't. I have 2 degrees and graduated with honors but I flunked out the last class and I am taking it in BR. Some of it had to do with personal problems, some with burnout. If you live home with mom and do not have other commitments it is much easier, but again others with children passed. I think it is a matter of energy. I am older and just seemed to run out of energy no matter how ADD I normally am. Keep a sense of humor, and don't believe it when the teachers say "Just study the notes."

Thanks I appreciate the information. I am just alittle nervous. I do live at home with my my mom but that is an 1 1/2 hours away from BR. Well good luck with your last course. And once again thanks for the info. I am sure that I will be getting back in touch with ya!

Hi!

I am new to this site. I came across it in doing some research on OLOL's ASN program. I've recently decided to try to get into the program myself and I am very excited. All I have done so far is applied to OLOL college. I'm not sure what to do next. Anyone know???? I have a bachelor's degree and know there are 6-12 hours of prereqs that I need to get. I am working on that. However, I am a little disappointed in the fact that all of the info I can find on OLOLs websites is old stuff. I am interested in taking classes through Tulane, EJ or WJ. I found lots of websites, but the dates are from 2008! Someone from admissions called me this morning because she was confused about which semester I was trying to get into. Well, frankly, so am I because I didn't realize that they didn't all start in August. Apparently, she said WJ starts in Jan., EJ- next summer and Tulane this summer?? I've emailed someone on the issue, but am anxious to see if anyone out there knows anything.

THANKS SO MUCH!

My prerequisites are in progress. I have A&P 2 to take over the summer and this is it. I am hoping that I will be admitted to the Fall 09 East Jeff class. The deadline was in March, I think (I applied last June but still had to take 6 classes). West Jeff deadline is Aug. 15 I believe & their program starts in Jan. Each program is slightly different but you can use one app if you pay each application fee. Call admissions in Baton Rouge & they will give you name & number of person in New Orleans to call who can give you detailed info. Best of luck.

Thanks so much! Good luck on getting in at EJ. That's where I'd like to take classes, but I missed the deadline.

I ended up finding out some info about deadlines, etc. You're right, WJ deadline is Aug. 15 for Jan. clases. I am applying for that. I still have a few prereqs too. I will be taking Chem and Micro over the summer. I can't wait to hear back from OLOL. I know I need a Nutrition class and a Developmental Psych class, but I have all of those at higher level courses than what is required. I can assume, but would rather know for sure if they will accept my 4000 level courses in place of 2000 level courses. If they don't, then I guess I will be having to take those too. I am also thinking about taking A&P 2 over. It is the one class that I got a C in.

I'm very excited about this new endeavor, but am starting to get very nervous too. My GPA is not as high as I'd like it to be (I had a some younger, college immaturity that I now regret). I am realizing how much I will be putting on hold until I find out if I am in or not. Scary stuff. But, I know it will all be worth it in the end.

Anyone else trying for WJ Jan. '10?????? I'd love to hear from you and see where you are in the app. process. GOOD LUCK TO ALL!

Welcome, this site is the best. When you start in school you will find all kinds of resources here. I use it everyday.

Our days at Tuland/OLOL accelerated program usually last until around 3-3:30, start at 9:00. There are usually 3-4 clinical days a month and three exams a month, so usually one exam a week. Clinicals are 7a-7p. There are checkoffs on nursing skills and papers to be done. We have guest speakers, do presentations and have clinical paperwork. It is fast paced and tough.

Anything else? Again if you search for OLOL info. there is a wealth of info that will give you an idea of what it is like.

Good Luck

Could you tell me how the presentations are for the program. Are they individual or group, how many, were they a big deal or interesting and fun? thanks

Could someone tell me what all of the required pre-reqs are? All I can find are the code names (BIO234, etc) on the website:(
