I am returning my renewal application this week (8/2005) for RN to Ohio BON. Question on app asks if I have ever been denie a professional liscense in another state. The fact is, I applied for an RN license in AZ. While there, I failed a pre-employement drug screen and self reported it to the AZBN, long story short, I was denied. However, I returned to my home state of OHio, notified the AZBN in Febuary that I was not practicing nursing there and gave my new addrdess. I see from their online verification system that my licensed was denied in March, they said they had no record of me changing my address with them. Well, I'm not sure what my question is. I will tell the Ohio BON about my licensure denial, will they renew my license? The evidence from AZ does not look good, and I do not want to send this to the board in Ohio. The directions on the Ohio renewal license state to send a written summary and documents from the acting body. Any suggestions would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Found your post. Hmm. So you have a report from the Az BON about your being denied the license?? If so, you must attach that to your application along with your written summary regarding the issue. Your license has not been revoked, correct?? Just follow up with Ohio BON and be totally honest. If your license is not under any kind of scrutiny. then I think you will be o.k. But, I am unfamiliar with Ohio nursing law and you just HAVE to follow up with them.

No, my license is not under scrutiny that I am aware of. I have never been informed of any investigation, and there is no disciplinary action posted. However, as I said, the evidence the AZBN obtained was from a former employer in Ohio. AZ tried to contact me about the hearing, was unable to do so. I called them last week to see the reasoning for the denial, and they faxed me the paperwork. I was let go from the Ohio employer for refusal to take a drug screen, but that is not what was written in my file, it sounds much worse than that--wasted medication documentatoin discrepancy. I'm supposed to start a new job in a week--a plasma donation center--no medication involved whatsoever. I haven't worked as an RN since 2003 after that termination. I'm scared to death. I don't want to begin a new job, then have my license not renewed. Will the BON renew my license, then begin an investigation? I am an honorable person, I made mistakes and am trying to put them behind me, but now I have to report this to the board. When applying for renewal, do I just list the facts, or submit details with "my version".

If you have ever been denied a license for whatever reason, it must be reported. If not, and they find out later, they will take away the license that was granted to you. It is much better to tell the truth and just supply whatever documents that you have with it.
You need to list the facts, but you can also submit a letter stating your version. This more than likely will automatically bring your file up for review, so the chance of you actually having the license in your hand next week is going to cause problems. Especially since it doesn't sound like you have even submitted anything as of yet.

I agree; whatever the situation, it will always be much worse for you if the Board finds out that you were not completely honest with them in the first place.
If the application asks if you were ever denied a license, and you have been denied a license, then, YES, you have to report that. It does not mean that you automatically will lose your license; it means that the Board will review your situation and make an individual determination based on the facts of your situation. You can certainly submit to them any documentation you have that supports your version of events.

Thank you guys very much. I am writing the BON today--I'll just have to see what happens. Does anyone have any idea how long it usually takes to receive a license after you send in a renewal?

Since you are late renewing, it may take 3 to 6 weeks. Did you send in the late fee?

This time of year in Ohio (due to the other last-minute people), you can probably expect it to take 4-5 weeks for processing. You can apply online now, and the information was included with your renewal application.
Make sure you sent the right amount of money with you app--I think it starts to get more expensive in August, doesn't it?
