Do violations from when you are a minor show up on a background check? I live in NY. Any info would be appreciated! Thanks

Hello, collennurse,

It depends and I am unfamiliar with the NY laws.

When one is a minor, the records are often sealed. And, in some states, you would need to get them expunged in order to actually "not have a record".

You need to check with the NY state BON.

Well I have already contacted the BON and they have told me that I am ok as far as my applpication for the NCLEX as it was not a felony or misdemeanor. I was wondering more for background checks on jobs. I called the town court office that the violation took place in, it was over 10 years ago, and they said the record was sealed. I just don't want to look like a liar, but I also do not want to have to say that I had a violation when I was 17 if I don't have to. Thanks! I am a worry wart :)

To place your mind at ease, why not look into having the record expunged?

How do you go about doing that? Would I need to hire a lawyer?

I found a couple links for NY that explains all about this.
