What is the best Legal Nurse Consulting program?

Hello Jnurse,

My name is Charly & am an LNC attempting to be an independent contractor. I worked in a plaintiff firm that specialized in medmal & PI. I did not participate in an LNC program I actually went back to college & obtained a degree as a paralegal in 2001! You need not do this. I did it because I had scholarships & wanted to obtain a more rounded view of the law & it did help. As far as LNC programs, there are many!! Universities are now having LNC programs to meet the demands of the growing number of RN's who want to further their career. Here in Florida, We have Florida Risk Management Institute that offer a wide variety of educational programs for healthcare programs. Once U take the program then you can sit for the AAMLC national certification examination. You have probably heard Vicki Milazzo, the pioneer of LNC. She has seminars, etc. but beware it is very expensive. Why don't you contact the AALNC @ http://www.aalnc.org to acquire further information. Bottom line: There are a lot to choose from just shop around & find the one that best suits you. I hope I have been of assistance. I am a little over half way through the Vicki Milazzo home study program and I think it is excellent. She is very inspiring. Good luck to you

Can anyone tell me if you have to have a BSN/MSN, etc. to be a legal nurse consultant? I am working towards my BSN now, so I don't know how much time I'd have to devote to the LNC program at this time, however, it is something I'd like to pursue in the future.

Actually, only about 20-25% of LNCs even take a certifying exam such as Vickie's or the AALNC's that requires at leats 3 years of full time hours. There has been talk recently on my listserv that some attorneys won't even hire a nurse with LNC after their name!

I went to the AALNC conference in Philidelphia in April and that was great. I want my certification. So I am educating myself , bought some books, doing research, networking with other LNC in my area and on LNC websites on the internet. I dont feel that is is necessary to pay all those big bucks to learn from someone else when you can do it yourself. i would encourage you to contact the AALNC.org for more info.

That is how I am doing it too!! I heard there was no use in sinking all that $$$ into those expensive programs. I bought some resources and have been studying. I bought the AALNC's book and it spells everything out in black and white. It tells you how to do reports, etc....marketing is covered also.

What is the best Legal Nurse Consulting program?
I have been doing allot of searching also. I did not have the extra cash to pay for some of the programs out there. On the AALNC web site there are books that explain everything. You can get individual books or sets it is up to you. I just ordered them and I am so excited because it cost 1/4 of some of the programs out there. As nurses we all like to work at our pace and be in charge of the pace we set ( which is usually max speed) so with this you learn at your own pace.

You do not need a BSN or MSN to be an LNC; But you do need an active RN license to get certified. You do need some clinical experience under your belt before you pursue work as an LNC.
