Exploring options in Legal Nursing

Specialties Legal

Published

Hello to all,

I have been an RN for 17 years. Specialties include CVICU and Dialysis, currently managing an outpt clinic. I have always been interested in Legal Nurse Consulting and now I have a 6 month old who is the love of my life. I want/need a job with much less stress, flexible hours, and the ability to be my own boss. This sounds like a good fit for my needs.

Questions:

1. It appears as though marketing yourself seems to be the key in obtaining work. Does anyone recommend a particular certification program for this? I have talked with Milazzo folks, but I can't swing the price of the VIP program right now..(diapers, formula, saving for his college) So I am looking for quality with paying highest price.

2. Can you market yourself with the fancy smancy marketing tools?

3. Is there a market for review of hemodialysis, ccpd, capd, crrt cases? I would like to specialize in this.

Any info would be great!!

Hello and Welcome to allnurses.com

It is good to have you with us.

Read through these threads about the AALNC and Milazzo Legal Nurse Consulting Programs and this one about Legal Nurse Consulting and Marketing Ideas.

Many do not seek out formal education to prepare as LNC. Others go different avenues of education. The above link is one of the two most popular educative entities.

It appears as though marketing yourself seems to be the key in obtaining work. Does anyone recommend a particular certification program for this?
Yes, marketing is key to success. Many fall by the wayside once they realize just how difficult this aspect of the career is.

In my opinion, one does not need a fancy and/or expensive course to enable/empower them to market themselves. A good sound business plan and research about the career should be all one needs to market adequately.

Can you market yourself with the fancy smancy marketing tools?
Not sure what you mean here. Could you elaborate?

One needs professional and quality tools with which to market to attorneys and/or other clients. If that is what you are referring to in your question. Tools with which to market start off very simple:

  • Letterhead
  • Envelopes
  • Business Cards
  • Folders as vehicles to contain marketing material
  • Brochures (optional in the beginning)

Is there a market for review of hemodialysis, ccpd, capd, crrt cases? I would like to specialize in this.
Most behind-the-scenes consultants do not limit their practice as LNC. You may or may not be able to successfully market yourself if you specialize in these areas.

Now, if you are an expert in these areas, you could serve as Expert Witness on cases. But, serving in this capacity is not necessary to become a successful LNC.

As you've already pointed out, marketing is key to success. And, this is the hardest job I've ever had. Being one's own boss, marketing, doing the work when you get it, continued marketing, exhibiting, etc....is hard hard work. Hours can be very flexible, but one must be highly motivated and rigid to keep normal "work" hours. There can be lots of down time. There is a lot of disappointment. But, you must be able to stay the course to be successful.

So, weigh your options as to which road you wish to take to become an LNC. If you have other questions/concerns, please post here. We are here to help you.

Thanks for the info. Question 2 was can you market yourself without the fancy (expensive) marketing plan that some courses try to sell you.

One more question: software???

In my opinion no, you do not need an expensive marketing course that some try to sell to you.

I sent you a private message about the litigation software.

I took the LNC course on-line through Legal Studies. It is based out of Colorado. I went through the University of South Carolina Aiken Campus to register. It was much more affordable for me, around 1200 with education materials. I haven't yet gotten started. I am traveling right now and is hard to market to my home state where I play to work when I am on the road, but am getting all the stuff together. It was a very good course and highly recommended. I learned a lot and found out a lot more about the avenues you can take with LNC. Good Luck and congratulations on the little one. ;)
