Where to Work While in School? Pre-Nursing Student

Hi All,

Does anyone in the area know of a good place to work or a program designed for pre nursing students who have little/no exp. in healthcare? I need to find some work before I get into nursing school, but I would like to start gaining healthcare experience, as I feel it may give an edge on a nursing school application. I have a volunteer interview lined up, but in the meantime my family is starving because I am hell-bent on getting As in school so I can get in. My husband is recently unemployed and looking for work as well, but we have 2 small children and are having financial difficulties at the moment. I feel the need to try and secure any kind of job, but before I go waiting tables, I thought I would try to put the feelers out for something related to my field. I am in the New Orleans area. Thanks!

Hi, I'm new to this site and I am in a similar situation. I'm in the Baton Rouge area and I have decided that I would try to find a CNA certification course so I could get some experience in the nursing field and if I don't get in this semester I will have an advantage in getting in in the Spring '10. I have found out that some nursing homes and hospitals have free programs but most of the ones around here are full. So I am looking into a program in Kenner,La that only take about 3 weeks. Hope this helps.

Check out that place on rip off report or better business bureau...there is some scam place in Kenner that has quick training that people have complained about. I'd be curious to see how you fared there if you decide to go with it. Someone also recommended getting certified as a phlebotemist before getting into school, too, in order to get the edge. Good luck!

Hi I myself attended the school in Kenner total rip off i even hurt my back there and they refuse to pay my medical bills. They claim i have to carry my own insurance. The don't even stay when your testing you can cheat and they don't care. Don't waste your money.

Thanks for the heads up, I also looked into the schools background and I don't think I will be attending that school but I am still looking for a CNA certification class. Most of the ones in the Baton Rouge area that are free are full and I wanted to start working this semester so that I will have an advantage on my nursing school application for the Spring '10. I was accepted to OLOL on the Alternates List and the only thing that I could think of that prevented me from getting in was the fact that I had no medical experince. So I'm gonna keep looking for a CNA class.

Thank again

You may consider looking into working at one of the dialysis facilities in that area. I first entered the medical field as a dialysis technician in the Shreveport area in 1982. All of my experience during that time was on the job training at the facility I worked at. I was able to stay in the dialysis field while attending nursing school in the late 1980's. The hours may be long and the work is extremely challenging, but the experience you will gain in performing physical assessments and monitoring patients while they are on the hemodialysis machines is invaluable. Some of the dialysis facilities have good medical benefits for their employees as well as other benefits regarding school reimbursement. I am not saying it is an easy job, but it is one that could open the doors for you to learn about the medical profession and hopefully attain your goal of becoming a nurse. I graduated from nursing school in 1992 and I have proudly served my country and my patients as a Navy Nurse for 19 years. I would not change one moment in time to achieve what I have done. You can do the same. Take care and God Bless.

If you want to work in the medical feild while in nursing school, maybe you should consider coming over to Lafayette. We have a ton of opportunites with several of our hospitals that offer free CNA training and Our Lady of Lourdes offers nursing students a great ACE program where you get follow the staff nurses around and watch them work. They pay you for this. It is usually easier to get hired after school if you were an ACE student. Our Lady of Lourdes is in the same network as Our Lady of the Lake the FMOL system. We don't have enough healthcare professionals in Lafayette and the local economy is booming not to mention its a great place to live and play!

Ii do appreciate the suggestion! Unfortunately, relocation is not exactly an option for me currently.
