Hi everyone! I just wanted to let everyone know about a very cheap option for immunizations. I am sure that everyone has probably taken care of mmr, varicella and tb skin tests, but Hep B is optional and ongoing. I found an excellent nurse at the Floyd Couny Health Dept. She is actually a Galen graduate from 2003. She is extremely nice and she is also the best person that
I have ever had give me a shot. If anyone still has the second mmr, varicella booster or 2nd tb skin tests to get, you should really go see her. She also gives the Hep B vaccines. The prices are below:
MMR $5
Varicella $5
TB skin test $5
Hep B $35
These prices are very cheap! You guys should really take advantage of her services.
I know that you all might be leary of going to the health department, as I was, but it was just like a regular doctor's office.
She only does immunizations by appointment, but she gets you in really quickly.
After we got our first round Friday, she went through her appointment book and set up all of the remaining boosters for the future.
Also, they do not check your income or ask for your social security or anything.
Her name is Robin Isaacs and she is located at the health department, which is behind Floyd Memorial Hospital in New Albany. (Only about 10 minutes from Louisville). Her number is 812 948-4726, extension 623. Just leave her a message and she will get back to you the same day!

They tell you what books you will need for each quarter at the begining of each quarter. Usually first day of class. And towards the end of the program you dont really have to buy n e more books. Just use your med surg for Adult 1-4.. So its not too bad..

Hi again! I meant to tell you all that when I asked the health nurse if she liked Galen, she said that they are very hard on you. She said that she was glad when she graduated though, because she did well on her NClex and she had become a very good nurse. 
I was reading an article in a Vegas newspaper and it says that Vegas has the greatest shortage of nurses in the country. They have elderly people flocking there and very bad nursing schools. The article said that the schools are so bad that 90 percent of the nursing student who graduate, fail the N Clex and can't get licensed. 
Apparently, the schools are too easy! I really think that Galen is going to be a very good school for all of us!

Hey guys! I've really enjoyed reading this thread!! I am a fellow Louisvillian, 22 years old, just graduated with my Bachelor's Degree in Broadcasting Film last year (big change, I know!) I've applied to all of the accelerated 2nd BSN degree programs in the area like UofL Spalding etc, but they don't start until next year! So I've considered Galen. I honestly didn't think it was a reputable school until I checked online and found out all these great reviews and experiences people have had at Galen! I'm going in to meet with an advisor tomorrow afternoon to apply for the October class, and be put on the waiting list for the July class because it's already pretty full.
Does anyone else have their Bachelor's in another field who is going to Galen for their RN? (I'm too lazy to search through all 25 pages of this thread to see if there is, lol) What are their standards for admitting people who have a Bachelor's Degree? I just saw the high school requirements on Galen's website. Also, how long did it take to get accepted once you applied?
Also, I saw someone on this thread noted that they didn't want to get their RN at Galen because they are not SACS accredited. What exactly does this mean, and is it really not worth becoming an RN there because of that?

Galen's accreditation is only through The Council on Occupational Education. This limits you to which schools you can go to after Galen to get your RN to BSN; if you even want to. Currently, Galen has a relationship with University of Phoenix and Indiana Wesleyan University. So you can transfer to one of these schools from Galen and get your Bachelor's in nursing if you want to further your education. Both of these schools do have the national accreditation that you would need to further your education even more; if desired. Also, I spoke to the
head of the nursing department at IUS the other day and she told me that IUS accepts Galen RN's into their one year on-line RN to BSN program.
Some people just want to be RN's; which is great, so there is no need to go any further than Galen. I am planning on getting my RN from Galen and getting to work. Then while I am working, I am going to do the RN to BSN online at IUS. Eventually, I want to go to a 3 year program to become an Anesthesia Nurse. They are doing
very well right now! The average Anesthesia nurse salary is about $150k.
I don't have a bachelor's degree yet. I did one year at JCC and one year at U of L, so I will be able to use some of the classes towards the second year of Galen and some of them at IUS.
I hope that I answered your questions. JCC, Ivy Tech and U of L all have such a wait to get into nursing.
Galen is the best option for getting your RN and getting to work, so you can earn some money and get some
experience. I know that Galen is expensive, but you have to weigh the income that you will be making sooner against waiting to start in another program, even though the tuition is less. I think that in the long run you come out ahead paying more tuition and getting to work faster!

Thank you so much for your reply! I definitely want to further my education and get a BSN, then maybe go to graduate school to specialize in something to be a nurse anesthetist similar to you Galens tuition is honestly pretty decent! I think it's the same price as JCC- I looked into Spalding's tuition prices and the nursing school classes are almost $800 a credit  and Galen's are (i think) around $225. I think making money sooner will be the best option... I just cannot get a job in anything I related to what I majored in right now, yikes! Anyway, thank you so much again | | No. 246 |

To get your RN att JCC is $8,000, Ivy Tech is $5,000.. So Galen is a lot more expensive, right around $26,000. The only thing that Galen offers that would make me consider stayin there after i graduate in july w/ my LPN is the fact they offer evening classes. JCC and Ivy Tech only offer a day program. BUT both those school have there accredition, to continue on to get your BSN. So definately think about it, long and hard and way all your options. I would recommand the LPN program, havent had to many bad experiances.

Wow, you're right. That's a big price difference compared to $20,000 to get your RN at Galen. Will all of your classes at Galen transfer to Ivy Tech and JCC? Thanks for all your info, it's nice to talk to someone who's went there | | No. 248 |

Yes, Galen is very expensive, especially compared to Ivy Tech and JCC. The problem is that you don't know how long you'll have to wait to get into either one of their nursing programs. You don't know what kind of wait they are already on before you apply. Also, I've been to JCC. I hate to say it, but JCC is "ghetto". That is not a word that I usually use, but it describes the place well!

When you go on to get your RN, you dont use n e of your LPN classes.. You have to retake classes, its all just a lot more in depth. Most of the previous classes you have will transfer into Galen RN program, but not on your classes when you finish in the Galen RN program will transfer out to n e school except U of Phonenix and Indiana Weslyn. Also, i live in Indiana so i plan on goin to Ivy Tech, I've heard JCC is a little "ghetto" but a few of the instructors at Galen went to JCC and really approved of there RN program.. So its all just your preference..
