New Grad can't find job

U.S.A. Kansas

Published

Hello,

I'm a May 2004 new grad and still haven't began working yet. I just recently took the NCLEX a couple of weeks ago and began looking for a job which I thought would be easy with the nursing shortage and all. Yeah, right! The search has been a nightmare! No one wants to hire a new grad. This just doesn't make sense to me because I see job postings all the time for RN positions so I'm not sure why they wouldn't be willing to take a new grad under their wings so they could help ease the workload of their nurses. In addition I am a new grad so I have no preconceptions, I'm just here waiting and ready to learn and become a expereinced RN. So if any of you know if they are hiring new grads anywhere at this time, please let me know. Cause right now it's looking like I'm never gonna work as a nurse, it's a catch-22. you have to have experience to get hired, but how do I gain experience if no one is willing to hire me?

Specializes in PICU, Peds Ambulatory, Peds LTC.

You are not alone! Passed NCLEX in May and still nothing! :angryfire

Just FYI: Kansas is one of the few states where the U.S. Health Department did not find and does not project a shortage in the next several years. So, even though there is a nationwide shortage, there may not be one in your particular state.

Also, did you authorize a credit check in your applications? And, if so, do you not have great credit? Just FYI: There have been instances where people have lost jobs because of poor credit.

The other potential problem is that training new grads can cost employers a lot of money. Even though new grads make less money, it can cost as much as hiring experienced RNs because of the training, so they go ahead and hire the experienced RNs. That may be another reason.

:coollook:

My credit is fine and I have seen job postings in both KS and MO. It might just be what you are saying, they just don't want to hire a new grad to pay for the training.

New grads:

It's time to pack your bags and move elsewhere. There is a whole world out there full of nursing internships where new grads are welcomed with open arms.

You can always go back home once you've built up an impressive resume.

If NYC and Kansas don't appreciate you, take your very valuable RN license elsewhere and let someone else make a nurse out of you.

My hospital pays relocation expenses and many others do as well.

Credit check? I personally object to them even though I have excellent credit. It's the principle. But if I were a new grad and needed to get in somewhere......sometimes you have to give up your beliefs to get where you need to be.

Specializes in Telemetry, ICU, Resource Pool, Dialysis.

If you live near Wichita, or are willing to relocate, I know the hospitals there hire new grads all the time. Several of the smaller hospitals in outlying towns also hire new grads. Try Kingman, Salina, Hutch...feel free to e-mail me.:)

I am so sorry to read about your recent experience with job hunting. I remember when I came out of school, had passed my boards, and was an LPN before going for RN, I had to take a load of crap from several facilities before I was given a chance by one facility. I agree that you may have to broaden your search area, but hang in there, one day the phone will ring and it will be an offer you won't want to refuse. Good luck on your search and remember we all had to start somewhere and we were all new grads once too. :balloons:

I guess I spoke too soon. I finally got a job and it's where I'd like to work. I'll be working in a level I trauma ER facility in the inner city. I know the job will be tough, but I embrace the challenge and can't wait to learn. I can't wait until after a year or so goes by and I can begin to call myself an experienced nurse.

Wesley, St. Francis and St. Joseph hire new grads -all- the time. (This is in Wichita)

You are not alone! Passed NCLEX in May and still nothing! :angryfire
