?? re: working for KU hospital

U.S.A. Kansas

Published

I have some questions for anyone who works at KU (the hospital, that is, not the university itself).

1. I hear they have a weekend option--do you have anymore specific details on that? Is it for every specialty (I would want mother-baby and/or L&D)? Do you have to work there a specific amount of time before you can do the weekend option? How much exactly is it--does it work out to be the equivalent of "work two days, get paid for three?"

1A. What does "weekend" mean, in terms of nights? Is it Friday and Saturday night, or is it Sat and Sunday night?

2. I want to do the RN-MSN program, probably ending with a CNM/ARNP. I see on their website that you can get up to 6 hours tuition reimbursment for classes. Does this include graduate level classes? Can you take advantage of this indefinitely, or do they only allow a certain maximum number of classes?

3. I live in east Lawrence--what is the commute like, honestly? Will it take over an hour each way? Yahoo maps puts it at 45 minutes--is this realistic? I'm not moving, my husband has a job here and my kids are happy in their schools.

4. What is the insurance like? Living in Lawrence, will I have any PCP options here? Or will everything be based in KC, so that I will end up paying out of network/out of pocket for my family's care?

Any other input? Thanks in advance!

Anyone here work at KU Med? Anyone?

Buhler...buhler....buhler....

I work at KU but don't have benefits due to PRN status. I understand the benefits are really great and don't cost a lot. They do not have a weekend shift on my unit....not sure about the others...ours is a schedule yourself unit. You choose when you want to work and they do have differential pay.

The drive takes about 30 minutes for me and I live in Olathe. I leave at 6:15 am for the 7 am shift because you have to park out in nevernever land and it takes a full fifteen minutes to walk to the hospital or get a bus. They just implemented a bus that picks up and drops of in Lawrence but, I don't know how that works out for those who do it...it is very new.

If you don't mind the drive and the walk to the hospital it is a good place to work....usually. If you work on a good unit.

Good luck! I hope somebody else can answer some of the other questions you have.

Specializes in Nursing school.

I live in Lawrence and have been working at KUMC for a year and a half... I leave lawrence at 545 to make sure I'm parked and clocked in by 645...

they pay very well... more money for nights, weekends, and holiday...
