Re: New LPN looking for job opportunities
I'm in Kansas and the job market is VERY tight here for RNs right now so it is evern tighter for LPNs. I would forget getting on at a hospital right now. Your best bet is long term care; nursing homes, and you may only find openings on the night shift, if you find any at all. The best way to go about this is to go to the yellow pages on Yahoo and put in a JOCO city such as Olathe as your location. Then, look up long term care/retirement homes, and go into the "distance" tab. You will be able to pull up every nursing home or assisted living facility within whatever distance you are willing to drive. I would get in my car, with copies of a resume with your phone number on it, and if you could get a letter of recommendation from an instructor, that would help. Go to each and every one of them in person. Ask to speak to the Director of Nursing. Tell them you are looking for a job and are able to work ANY shift. Jobs are not plentiful, even for nurses with experience, and you need to make an impression; meet them in person; get out and about. This is how we got jobs when the market was tight many years ago. Also, searching on line can give you leads. One option that I do know of is Osawatomie State Hospital. They list their openings on the State of Kansas employment page, and it tells you how to apply, etc. However, just because they have open positions does not mean they have funding to hire...just something to look into. Forget everything you were told a year ago about it being easy to get a job as a nurse, etc. That is not the case right now at all. Oh, and as soon as you have a stable job, get to work on getting that RN. Don't stop at this level. Good luck!
