Opinions please.

  1. Hi all,

I'm kinda new here. My name is Nuru and I've been in nursing for 10years (8 of those in critical care) now. Just moved to Canada from the UK with my hubby. At the moment am in the process of trying to decide where I want to work.

You see I've got two job offers, one in a CCU and the other in a med/surgical ICU and I'm not sure which one to go for.

What do you guys look for when deciding on your ideal job.

I would look at the nurse manager! How would this person be to work with. In addition, if each opportunity provides you with an interest and they are both equal in your mind, then I would look to the one that has the best running operation and where the manager is active and involved and the staff nurse has a voice in how the unit is run. Lastly, I would take the time to talk with the nurses on the unit and see how they like working there. Discuss their relationship with physicians as well as their relationship with the boss. Good luck!

Thanks so much for answering RNPATL,

Funny you said that that because I've been leaning towards the med/surg ICU because the atmosphere there just seemed so much more friendlier than in the CCU.

From the point of view of the physicians the nurse manager in the med/surg ICU did say at one point that she always encouraged nurses to call the attending if they weren't happy with a residents decision (its a teaching hosp). She seemed to be very supporting.

That is great. Perhaps this is the choice for you then. Let usknow what you decide?

what i would seek from my 1st impression is whether it seems like a stimulating and interactive environment; or do the staff operate with flat affects, aka, the stepford nurses. but what is the most important to me is the standards of care that the nsg. staff either possess or seek to possess. i want to work with a bunch of people who are damn proud of themselves, their collegues and what they represent/offer individually and collectively. even though we (me and my nsg. buddies) bicker alot, it's always because of differences of what would be best for our pts....a top notch group, i'm proud to say.
