neuro RN

  1. hello everyone i found this website today as i surfed the web to answer a question on chest tube dressings. In neuro you hardly see chest tubes and i wanted to know how long after removing a chest tube do you keep the original dressing on. I had a patient that had a chest tube removed and wanted to know how long the dressing had to stay on because she wanted to take a shower.

You should be able to put a new drsg on right away after the chest tube is removed. An occlusive dressing will do. If you have something that you can also put on it over it so she won't get it wet while in the shower, or just change it again after her shower, it will be fine. The skin and fasica on the inside should close right up to a certain degree. That it should be fine for the time being until you can change the drsg, after her shower. Be sure to put some bacitracin ointment or antibiotic ointment on the site.
