The grass is always greener on the other side.

I plan on starting nursing school this fall (if all goes well), also!

Good luck, and welcome to allnurses!

I have always wanted to be a nurse. couldnt work for four years due to my back but cant wait to go back to work. that is as soon as florida processes my license.
I know many nurses who absolutely love their work. my family is full of them but none of my daughters want to be a nurse.
I want to wish you the best of luck-plan to study hard-it's well worth the time and effort. mari

It's not just a job, it's an adventure. I love what I do. When I was sixteen, sitting around a table, smoking a joint with my friends, the topic came up, "What do you wanna be when you grow up?" When I said that I thought being a nurse would be cool, they all laughed and said that was for girls. Being the people pleaser that I am, I laughed too, brushed it off and didnt give it another thought until fourteen years later when health reasons made me look for another line of work. Some people are meant to be bankers and some people are meant to be painters, and some of us, are meant to be nurses. Maybe the ones that bad mouthed their profession weren't meant to be nurses.

    Chris,
You are the one that has to make the final decision, the choice is only yours to make. One thing I can tell you is that you will be getting your nursing license, you will have many more doors open to you as far as work. The work that you can select can be as physical as you want it to be.

If it is just the nurses at the facility that are telling you to stay away from nursing, perhaps that have a problem where they are working. I am not sure what the ratios are that they have there.........etc.

But nursing can be what ever you want it to be for you. Good luck on making the best decision for you.

Hi Chris and welcome....If nursing is what you want I say go for it...I've been a nurse for going on 15 years..while some days really SUCK, for the most part I like my career choice..but, your HEART must be in it..and you truly have to CARE about people to stick with it (just my opinion)...maybe you could talk with the Director of Nursing at your facility and discuss you future nursing plans..and maybe shadow a nurse for a day or so to get a real picture of what all nursing involves...nothing like reality to help you make a good decision....best wishes , and good luck in whatever you decide

If becoming an RN is truely what you want then go for your dream.

I agree with BGSUstudent, if it's what you want go for it.
When I told my Mum and my Nan that I want to be a midwife they were like why on earth do you want to do that.
However it's what I really want to do and so no amount of negativity will make me change my mind. There will always be people who will put your choices down, as long as you are doing what feels right to you stick with it.
As for those nurses that told you to run maybe they were having a bad day, trying to be funny or maybe they have chosen the wrong career.
Maybe you should shadow a nurse to find out how you feel.
Good Luck and do what makes you happy

i am not sure of your situation or why/how you have chosen to go into the field of nursing, but i can tell you that it has made a dramatic difference in my life. from the time i could walk and talk all i have wanted to do is "be a nurse." i have let my life go in several different directions and have strayed away from nursing school until about 2 years ago. but i will be graduating in about 4 weeks and i can honestly say that i could not ask for a more gratifying profession. i have worked part time throughout nursing school and my sister is in school with me. we will be graduating together . which is sometimes good, sometimes trivial?! my mother is also a nurse and has been for 40 years. i have learned through my own clinical experiences, working in the er, and living with my mother and her experiences that nursing really does rock!! just in nursing school, i have received letters and cards from patients that have just wanted to say "thanks" for taking the time to show them a little extra care and attention. this makes all of those days that really suck worth while!! there are great opportunities in nursing and there are a vast number of areas that you can work in as a nurse! i wish you the best and hope you make the decision that makes you truly happy! i think nursing is the best! but you have to make your decision based on what is in your heart and don't let people sway your opinion in a good or bad way.. do what's right for you and you will have no regrets!!

    good luck!
