Correctional Nursing

  1. correctional nursing too dangerous?i am currently an lpn student thinking about going into correctional nursing. many people tell me not to because it is dangerous and that i shouldn't work with inmates. i was an emt and i like being in emergency situations, just not all the time. i heard that correctional nursing has a large variety of duties which is why i would like to go into this field. how is the pay compared to other facilities? if anybody could give me any feedback it would help...

i worked at bill clements unit amarillo,tx and can honestly say, this was a good experience for me. we had a 19 bed hospital, emergency room and 4 crisis rooms. we held clinic around the clock. saw multiple injuries, some caused by self-infliction, athletic-type injuries, others by other inmates. there were security guards posted at the nutrses station at all times, and when we went to 8-pod which contained the most dangerous on inmates, we had a cubicle where we gave the medication from. there were set times for the nurses to go eat as a group. we were assigned to our own treatment room and the inmates would come to the med window. the inmates were seen by the nurses prior to being seen by the doctor and if the injury or complaint was something we could not take care of the inmate was then referred to the doc. alot of basic first aid stuff. for me this was a great learning experience and still today i look back on that job fondly, in fact if i ever relocate to texas that is one place i'd like to work again. yes there were times when things got tense, and there were things i had no clue that i was going to be exposed to...but over all i guess the only complaint i had was getting paid on a monthly basis. i hope this helps, its been about 10yrs since i worked there. i'm at a va psch floor now.

Hello, I'm rice, a RN from the Philippines, I'm 37y.o. and still single ( because I'm married to EDUCATION :chuckle ), I'm a clinical instructor assigned at OR for almost 3years, and I'm in my last units for MSN. (this motivates me to register on this community) I believe that this web site would be a great help. Thanks in advance for welcoming me as part of your family.
