considering the profession

  1. Hello. This is my 1st time on this site. I am an elementary school teacher & have been teaching for 6 yrs. I am ready for a change in my life. I am very interested in nursing...I know I have the aptitude. I am just concerned about the technical side....IV's and blood....I can be a little squeemish. Have you worked with anyone in nursing school who felt that way but then got over it?

Not in school yet...just taking the prerequisites, however, I hope to get in Fall 2006. Welcome to the site!

My mom got her Occupational Therapy degree and also did clinicals in several hospitals/rehab centers. When she did Gross Anatomy, she thought she would freak out, but ended up loving it!

One nurse told me (because I was worried about this also) that 1) nursing school will cure you of a lot of things (ha ha) and also that 2) when you see a patient needing your help, your instincts and training "kick in" and you just want to help the person in need.

I volunteered at a hospital on Saturdays for 4 months before even putting myself down on the waitlist. I wanted to make SURE that the medical field was where I wanted to go into.

Can you volunteer somewhere? It really helped me make my decision.

It's very encouraging to know that you can get over some of the squeamishness. I'm not worried about blood and gore personally (I actually find it quite fascinating), but I do worry sometimes that I'm not comfortable enough with the body in general to be a nurse. Thanks for posting that.

Hello and welcome to allnurses.com. Yes, many of us are squeamish about one thing or another----usually we find our "niche" in nursing and it works out fine.
