ADN and a BA but still need a BSN?

  1. Hello Everyone! My name is Jen I am a 40 year old mother of 2 looking into Nursing as a second career.

I hold a BA in Biology and have applied to schools to start my ADN but I'm wondering if I will still need to seek a BSN even though I already have a BA.

If so, should I complete the ADN program and then get the BSN online? Or should I try to pump up my GPA (which was not as great as it could have been, originally) after re-taking all of the nursing pre-reqs and then apply to schools with an accelerated BSN degree (instead of ADN) since I have already taken general college coursework to get my BA?

I'm trying to find the best route dollar and time-wise.

    Thank you!

If so, should I complete the ADN program and then get the BSN online? This could work depending on the job market in your area for ADNs

Accelerated BSN programs are intense, but designed for people with a BA, like you. Are you sure your grades do not qualify?

I'm trying to find the best route dollar and time-wise. So many variables- how soon you need to start working, how many courses you are thinking about re-taking, and what's best for your family.

    Thank you!
    Best wishes on your decision!

Hi Nurse Beth - thank you for the response! Yes, my grades do not qualify, but I'm hoping to rectify that by acing the pre-reqs. I feel like my decision might be up in the air until those classes are finished and I can fully weigh the time & money options. Ah, uncertainty!

Continue with the prerequisites and in getting the best grades possible. Then apply to BSN programs and ASN programs. Go where you are accepted. If accepted to both a BSN and ASN program, attend the BSN program and be done with it.
