about to start school

  1. Hi! I am new to all nurses, and I am seeking some advise. I just moved from B.F.E. to Phoenix after leaving my husband of 10 years. I have a soon to be 9 year-old girl and soon to be 1 year-old son ( b-days are 4 days apart!). I have wanted to go to school for some years now for R.N. or C.N.M., but was dicourraged by husband. So now, here I am 29, and having to start from scratch. My question to all of you is this: If you were in my possition, what would you do? Keeping in mind, the age of the baby, needing to start with pre-req's, and no schooling since high school. Is it smart to get C.N.A. first? Is it possible to obtain that and start pre-req's and see children? What about income? I am feeling quite overwhelmed. Thank you to any responses, I am so glad I found this site.

are you already working? if not, a cna program may be the best for you.
phoenix actually has quite a few nursing programs to choose from. some of the classes can actually be done on-line while your baby is sleeping. do you arrangements made for daycare for your little one when you have to attend class?

which part of the valley are you actually living in, then perhaps i can suggest some schools to you. i lived there for about 14 years.

and, a big welcome to allnurses.com..................

HI SUZANNE4! I AM NOT REALLY WORKING. I WATCH 5 KIDS, PLUS MY 2, THREE DAYS A WEEK FOR ONLY A FEW HOURS EACH DAY. I AM STAYING WITH MY MOTHER FOR FINANCIAL SUPPORT WHILE I GET ON MY FEET AND DECIDE WHAT NEXT. WHAT EXACTALY DO PEOPLE MEAN WHEN THEY SAY "NURSING PROGRAM"? WHEN I LIVED OUTSIDE OF SHOW LOW, NURSES I TALKED TO MADE IT SOUND LIKE YOU CAN START OFF (in the only hospital) AS A NURSE ASSISTANT WITH NO PRIOR TRAING, AND THEY WOULD TRAIN YOU AND SEND YOU TO SCHOOL. DOES ANY OF THIS SOUND REMOTELY ACCURATE? iN ALBQUREQUE, SOME YEARS AGO, A FREIND TRIED TO GET ME IN AT A HOSPITAL AS A NURSE ASST. ONLY WHEN THEY ASKED ME IF I COULD HANDLE THINGS LIKE BED-PANS, I ABOUT YACKED! THIS WAS AT AGE 18, BEFORE CHILDREN.
WHEN YOU SAY ON-LINE CLASSES, ARE YOU TALKING PRE-REQ'S. I'M A VISUAL LEARNER. AND I'M HORRIBLE AT MATH. AS FAR AS DAY CARE, MY OLDEST WILL BE STARTING SCHOOL, AND I HOPE MY BABY WOULD ONLY HAVE TO BE IN DAYCARE PART TIME. MY MOM WILL HELP OUT WHERE POSSIBLE. SHE'S A 9-5 LADY. AND I LIVE AT 7th STREET AND THUNDERBIRD. NOT FAR FROM PARIDISE VALLEY C.C. I HAD MY SON AT SCOTTSDALE/SHEA HEALTH CENTER, C-SECTION. THE WONDERFULL NURSES THERE INSPIRED ME TO GET A MOVE ON IN BECOMING A NURSE. THEY WERE AWSOME!!!!

Hi and welcome to all nurses! you might want to post your question to the student nursing forum for more answers. As for me, I would go for it and not waste any time, but that is my opinion. Do you have a lot of support for the kids so that they won't be feeling lonesome? Do you have daycare set up? etc.....lots of things to consider! Good luck!

I have been divorced for 3 years now and have 3 kids. I jumped right into college after my divorce. I also don't have my CNA. I currently work part time in home health as a HHA, no prevoius education required. I go to school part time, so I am on the 5 year plan to get my ADN and 7 year plan for BSN. If you want this jump in and do it. The benefit of getting your CNA may help you to make more money while in school. It may also allow you the opportunity to work in a hospital setting while working on your nursing degree. My best suggestion is get all the aid that you can get and don't feel bad about it. It's only temporary and its for the children anyway. You can apply for financial aid for school. Then you can go to your local Social Services and get medical insurance, food stamps, and child care assistance for your children. Don't get me wrong, this is not easy. I'm so tired of being poor, but I know in the end it will be well worth it. Also helps to have a good friend, who can listen and encourage you to keep going when things get rough. My best friend is getting ready to move away, but he has been a life saver at times. I start the nursing program this fall. I have all my other classes done except for strictly nursing. If I can do this anyone can!!!!!

What is HHA? Is that home health asst.? Anyway, one of the "perks" of being married to someone with no ambition, I am already on the "system". I am totally embarrased every time I buy grocerys with food stamps, but it gets my kids fed. Both children are on state medical, Arizona has it's own that is better than medicaide. The state will also pay for schooling, but I don't know if I can still apply for loans with this for living expenses. Thank you for the encourgement.
