A Big HELLO from LAS VEGAS!

  1. Hello everyone,

I never thought I'd make it this far in my nursing career so never registered....although I'm still a pre-nursing student, that's way farther than I thought I would last.
I'm originally from the Pacific Northwest where it rains 24/7 and have relocated to the desert heat of Nevada. I've been here for almost 2 years now and love it! I came to help my mom out who is also a nurse and runs care homes in Clark County.....which is one of the reasons I decided to ditch my computer geek background and get into the health industry...
alongside of the fact that I used to frequent the E.R. with my 2 young children at the site of anything as minor as a hangnail.
So there it is, a mother who lived and breathed nursing and parental paranoia has brought me here, fingers crossed to be accepted into next years entrance at my college.
I'm glad to be here and can't wait to make some friends!

hello.. I too am in the IT geek field, switching into the medical field. I'm also teetering on the idea of moving back to Las Vegas to do a nursing course there... What college do you recommend and how are the waiting lists? and will you be working in the IT field alongside schooling???? glad to see somebody starting out in LV!

Well as far as I know the schools that offer the ADN are CCSN and Apollo College (there maybe some other private institutions but those are all I know) UNLV and Nevada State offer BSN's and also RN - BSN bridge. University of Southern Nevada is offering an accelerated 18 month BSN (which I heard is very hard). The length of the waiting lists in all these schools is not the issue. The issue is how competitive they all are so getting super ridiculous high grades is the key. Me...well...I am not a "super ridiculous high grades" person. So it is very stressful. On the pre-nursing forums here I have read a few posts about certain people getting into their local college rather easily...it won't cut it here there are too many people trying to be a nurse. So last semester I was working as a Computer Tech/Network Tech and my grades suffered. So I quit and well now my wallet is suffering LOL.
    Wish you the best.

Thanks! you really gave me an idea as to what the scenery is over there... how about an LpN route in Nevada? What is your opinion. Are people trying to go through that way? and is "ridiculous high grades" an issue as is the RN program? =)
