I realized I've been on here for about a month (lurking and in the pre-nursing forum) but have yet to say hi and introduce myself and it's about time I did!
I'm Caryn! I'm 24 and live in NYC. I have a BS in Sports, Entertainment and Event Management and I'm taking my pre-reqs to hopefully get into an aBSN program for Fall 2010.
What made me decide to go for nursing?
It started this past Feb when I started dating a paramedic (who I'm no longer with but we are still friendly and he's taking his pre-reqs for his RN right now as well) who after leaving his class one night (he was teaching an EMT class) told me I'd make a great EMT. I laughed at him and changed the conversation. I thought about going into the medical field when I was younger (I was looking mainly at PT/OT) but I never thought I could do the sciences, and that was the biggest thing to scare me away. That, and I happen to be squeamish. One of his goals was to de-squeamish me, which I admit he did a pretty good job at.
I found myself unemployed and I decided to work sleep away camp for the summer. I was supposed to be working in the infirmary as the infirmary assistant but due to a head nurse who refused to work with me for reasons that are still unclear to me (and yes, I tried to talk to her but she was very unreasonable to a point where she was almost fired, there were a lot of issues with her this summer) I wound up in the office...but in the infirmary with him (and the other nurses, who were sweethearts) late at night once the head nurse went to bed (no matter what was going on she was up past 10 maybe 3 or 4 nights the entire summer) helping out and doing what needed to be done.
One of the nurses and other people around camp started asking me if I ever considered becoming an EMT or a nurse after seeing how much I loved being down there helping out and seeing how I reacted to several situations this summer...and it got me thinking. I still wasn't sure if I had it in me to go back to school and start from scratch, as I knew I didn't have any of the pre-reqs (I was wrong, I didn't realize stats was a pre-req LOL). I sat down with one of the nurses who I trusted and had several talks with her. It was her faith in me and some of the things that she shared and told me that made me believe I could do it...so I started looking up information.
Originally my thought was just to go for my ADN when someone mentioned I could apply for an accelerated program and get my BSN in the same amount of time. That's how I'm taking my pre-reqs now to get into a program.
That was a little longer then I thought it would be LOL!
A bit more about me...I love to read, I'm a huge baseball fan, pet lover and so much more. I look forward to getting to know you all!
