That's great. Did you like the course? There is a new one called PST Certificate course. It costs $350 and you get 12 credit hours for it. The IDTF I contract with has picked up the cost. Although, I didn't find it that useful for training patients. However, never a good idea to turn down free CEU's LOL.

Where do you work? Do you like coag nursing?

Trina,
The course was self paced and took about 6 weeks. I spent an average of 5-8 hours/wk with material. Excellent course. My employer also paid for my study time!!
I work at a clinic which last fall began our own Anticoagulation Clinic. My supervisor and I basically started from scratch, not knowing were to begin. We gratefully obtained all our protocols from a cardiology practice we are also affilated with. We use the CHEST guidelines. In a matter of 2 months, we have had over 225 referrals from within our own clinic. I manage these patients and am only budgeted for 3 full days a week. As time goes on and referrals keep coming, this will have to expand.... i hope. I love it so far. I think the autonomy is so nice compared to working in a MD office which I have done most recenlty and triage. Any more I can help with, let me know.

Jina-

I enjoyed working in the coag clinic at CC here in Kansas City too. Nothing better than not having someone looking over your shoulder. I truly became passionate about anticoagulation and the challenges. I spent alot of time doing research. It is amazing how much there is to know about a patient on warfarin...isn't there? I do miss the face to face interaction with the patients, however I do train patients in their home on the CoaguChek XS meter. I find it very rewarding. The patients are getting the convenience of testing their own INR at home, and I'm making $$$. It's truly the easiest money I've ever made.

Where are you from? Would your clinic be interested in prescribing home testing for any of your protime patients? Over 450 patient in Kansas City were trained in June alone!!! The clinic I used to work for shut down all 5 of their protime clinics and have converted almost a 1,000 patients to Home INR Testing. I think it's great. The patients like the fact that they don't have to go to the lab or come to the clinic and fight traffic, poor parking spots, and the waiting game...

Hope you have a great holiday. Be safe!
