RN-BSN Online Programs

I have been a RN for sixteen years with an Associates Degree. I also have always wanted to be a nursing instructor but have been very reluctant about going back to school, mostly because of my age. I will be 49 in May . I wanted to post this so that maybe I can get some feedback from those of you who have gone on to further their career, and also for those of you who can give me some 'positive' feedback in regards to possibly being too 'old'.

I also would like any information on BSN online programs. I am currently looking into Indiana Weslyn.

Thanks for any information you can give me.

Welcome to Allnurses!

I am 47 years old and doing an online RN to BSN program. I would say the majority of my fellow students are 40 plus, many in their 50's and one in her 60s. I hope to finish this June and in September start an MSN program in education. With my BSN I can teach a clinical group, with an MSN I can teach the class in the classroom or online.

I am loving the online experience. Check out this thread here where we are discussing RN to BSN programs. http://allnurses.com/forums/f125/rn-...ne-105380.html

Good luck!

I am new to allnures.com and ran across your post. What online program are you taking? It's nice to know that there are some nurses going back to get their BSN or MSN, when they are in their 40's, 50's, and even 60's. I guess it's never to late to go back to school. I am in the 'gathering info' stage of finding a good (and not so expensive) online program for nurses. And I was very hesitant about going back since I will be 49 this year

Thanks for any reply.

Hi there. If being an instructor is your goal, I would look for a program that is ADN to MSN and skip the BSN. When I went back to school (age 44 in 2002), I knew that my ultimate goal was the MSN. I am very sorry that I went the BSN to MSN route because I could have saved myself some time and lots of $$$. I would look for this type of program.

Your age is not a deciding factor - I'm 48 now and I figure that I will be working for another 20 years (probably just paying off the student loans - lol). Seriously, my MSN gives me more options.

Take care and good luck.

Thanks for replying and that is great advice. I wasn't aware that there was actual programs where you could go straight to get your MSN. Would you mind emailing me back and give me a little info about your experience (being an older student ) and how tough it was? It would be greatly appreciated. Why did you want your MSN? Teach??

Thanks

No problem. I was very stupid and thought I wanted to go into management so I got an MSN with a concentration in management and leadership. however, 6 months later, I was like "oh oh, I hate management." So, I did a post-MSN CNS and have been much happier.

Here is a position paper from the AACN about ADN to MSN programs:

I'm going to FHCHS. http://onlinenursing.fhchs.edu/

Good idea about going ADN to MSN, that would save time/money and cut down on a couple of courses.

Good luck in whatever you do!

Hi Everyone,

I just joined Allnurses. I am also deciding between RN-BSN and RN-MSN, does anyone know how the online programs work? Also if anyone has done any RN-MSN program, how long did it take.

Thank you for all your help!!!

Try looking in the student forums. There is a distance learning forum there that should give you plenty of threads about these programs.
