It's like all your life, you know in your heart, in the back of your mind, what you want to be, what you're called to do. My grandmother was a nurse and my grandfather a dr. It's in my blood. But I squelched the notion, perhaps because my divorced, business-driven mother was my only stable, career-oriented role model. But after completing my degree in business, getting out into the business world, I discovered it wasn't for me. And my wake-up call? My son being born at 35w gestation. Spending 20 hours a day for weeks at a time in a NICU gives you a pretty clear glimpse into the workings of the nurses who give their heart and time and patience to your little precious child, whom they just met hours or even minutes ago.
So now that I have my children about to enter elementary school, it's time for me to go to school, also. I have 6 years of maturing and real-life experience under my belt. I'm not looking for the big money from the big pharma company or accounting firm in Chicago. I know what I want to be; not what I think someone else wants me to be. Unfortunately, I can't get my pre-reqs done in time to get a fall or even a spring seat. So I will have to wait until Aug of '10. But it will be worth it. I've waited this long... :-)
