Old nurse, new concerns

Hello, all.

I'm a career nurse. I've been doing this since 1979, when I started nursing school and worked as an NA. I graduated as a Diploma, already had a BA.
Now I've gotten older. My back bothers me, I have a chronic and somewhat debiliatating illness. Life as a staff nurse is really really difficult these days- and yet, without the job, I can't live. I can't afford to go back to school to get the required degree to get me off my feet, into something that I can be equally effective at, without all the physical wear and tear.
I keep looking around for something that I can do, using all the experience I've gained over the years.
So far, nothing is available where I live and I do keep looking.
Any ideas?
Thanks

We had older people and those with physical limitations working on cases in home health where the nurse was primarily sitting with a patient. One nurse told me that she had a bad back so she only worked with infants and small children that she could easily lift and move and where the crib height was high enough for her to avoid bending. You might try going to a home health agency with your concerns and have them set you up with work meeting this criteria. Eventually you could be working full time with physically easier cases. Working with only one client at a time is also a plus for those with limitations. I have also worked on a case where male family members did all lifting and transfers for the nurses. Good luck.
