Hello,
Did you get the answers you were looking for? I am a nurse with brain injury rehab but have worked as Senior Occupational Health Nurse at the largest construction site in Canada a few years ago as well as Occupational Health Nurse at a big packing plant.
My 4 contracts work with the military as a staff nurse with my evaluation saying I was a nurse practitioner then as Chief Nursing Officer for the First National Cadet Tattoo allowed me to get the Occupational Health jobs.
I also worked on a psycho geriatric/infirmary unit and taught a native PSA course for a college in Edmonton. Of 15 native courses going at that time my class was the only one that never had a failure and never had any student needing a rewrite on the final test. I taught the course Monday to Friday and worked on the infirmary/infirmary unit on weekends sometimes pulling 3 shifts there. I did another nurse a favour on the weekend I was to be off and worked 3 shifts so she could be a good mom and then she transferred off the unit so I ended up working 10 weekends in a row. It was a long stretch.
Anyway I was working as a Psychiatric Aide on the Acute Adult Psychiatric Admission Unit for a few years then went to school to upgrade and get my RN/BScN through college and university. The only time I took off permanent afternoon shifts was during the final practicum I did on 4 reserves north of here. I was told it couldn't be done but you just have to focus and work hard.
So if you have an idea you would like to ask about I have a different perception from most nurses. I am also a male and was about 35 when I went back to school.
All the best,
Tom (malenurse@lycos.com)
