Working in Aus from the US

World International

Hey everyone! I have a quick question to anyone who has experience with my situation. I have family in Australia but I live in the US, I am a new grad but I have a contract for two years with my first job (which I am really excited about). However, after two years, I thought about working in Australia for some time (visited-and loved it). Are there programs that would allow me to take assigment in Australia temporarily-maybe six mo to two years as an international nurse? I would love to spend some time with my family (located in Brisbane) and do some traveling to this beautiful country. Any information is very helpful!

Do you need a visa allowing you to live and work in the country?

I am sure there are agencies where you can get some short term work but I think a lot will depend on status in the country. Also make sure you start AHPRA process sooner rather that later as it may be a long process

There are some work visas to Australia, which are given priority to RNs and MDs due to a shortage; however, you have to be sponsored. I'm just not sure how I'd go about finding a position that would be temporary, I will look to see if I find an agency! I read that AUS accepts US licenses but you have also have to apply to the state you are going to be working in. Maybe if I do find an agency they will help me with this process. I am doing this research now because I know it'll probably be a lengthy process but I think it would be very worth it! Thank you for the reply!

You don't apply to the state you'll be working in - there is national registration by AHPRA now. Decide where you want to work and contact hospitals there directly via their websites.

AHPRA does not except US licences, one needs to have education assessed and if successful then be registered with NMBA (Ahpra).

It is not sure if the ADN is still accepted as a suitable qualify for registration under the new criteria.
