While waiting for retrogression

Hi to all. I will really appreciate any thoughts on this:

I am an NCLEX passer and recently I got petitioned by my employer. I still have to wait for my priority date and I am aware that there will be waiting time for this. Because of the present over production of nurses in the Philippines, it is almost impossible to be hired and gain experience as a nurse here. Right now, I am a volunteer nurse. I am contemplating on working in Canada as a caregiver while waiting for the retrogression. Is this feasible?

I worked hard to pass NCLEX...right now we have financial problems and I think working as a caregiver can be a temporary solution. I really intend to work as a nurse in US though. But due to pressing financial problems I am really tempted to apply elsewhere just to augment our deficit.

Hope you can share your thoughts and insights on this. Thank you very much

Canada doesn't take kindly to being used as a stepping stone. That said why work as a caregiver? What a waste of nurse training. Either stick where you are & gain experience or apply to nurse elsewhere - you never know you might prefer it & stay.

The USA needn't be the be all & end all you know. I too worked hard for N-CLEX but took the decision to go to Canada because I can't be living in this limbo anymore. If I'm happy there then I'll stay for good.

Working as a caregiver does not give you credit as an RN, and if the US begins to require the actual work experience as an RN, then where will you be?

You really need to go someplace where you can get RN experience; you earned the degree, you should use that.

Best of luck to you. And you need to be aware that the caregiver salary in Canada is not going to give you any extra money to send home, it is quite cold there in the winter and almost all of your money will be going to heat and clothes for the weather there.

Thank you for the insights...

What you all said are true. I really intend to be a nurse and have a career not just a job.

My family is involved in my major decisions. In as much as I want to go to middle east, they are terrified at the idea of me going there. I hate discussions and arguments. It is really a hard decision to make.

I think my mom was miss informed regarding the salary of caregivers in canada. I don't know how true----$35/hour....too good to be true. Now she is nagging me to apply. I tried looking at the qualifications, I still need to train as a caregiver. It is also impossible to say that there will be no expenses. And yes, WHAT A WASTE OF NURSE TRAINING EXPERIENCE....so far I love what I am doing right now, I love the action in ER.

RN top wage is 39/hr, caregiver shouldn't be more than 20/hr. might be 15/hr

The caregiver contracts are for about $12 per hour as they are for unlicensed workers.

You are never going to see $35 per hour for that. Just not going to happen.

I would not give up your nursing experience in the ER for a Maid's position,
if and when the US opens it's doors your nursing experience will give you and edge.
