Which Provinces not Requiring BSN/BScN?

  1. Which provinces and territories are not requiring a BSN/BScN as entry to practice for all new nurses?

Up until about ten minutes ago, I was under the impression that a bachelors degree in nursing was now required for ALL new RNs in Canada, but apparently that is not the case.

    According to the CNA Website:
"Most provinces already require a baccalaureate in nursing (BN or BScN) to enter the profession."

And, lastly, does this look like it is something that will be changing soon, or is your province/territory planning to keep it that way? Are new graduates from diploma programs treated the same as new grads from degree programs?

They are slowly changing over, expect in the next two years or so that the minimum requirements for licensure in any province will be the BSN, or equivalent.

Is a diploma in nursing still an option?
Students preparing for a career in nursing in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, NWT and the Yukon currently have a choice of obtaining either a diploma or a degree. In all other provinces, students must obtain a degree in nursing to prepare for a career in nursing. Beginning in the year 2005, Ontario will require a degree to enter nursing.
