visa interview experience at new delhi

Hi guys, finally the long awaited day finally came. Heres the details

Reached new delhi embassy at around 8:30 am, our appointment was at 9 am. On first sight i was baffled at the number of people allready qued up. But when i reached the check point i realised there ia a seperate que for the immigrant visas, and there was to my surprise no one in that que. We were asked to directly go inside the embassy. Since i diddnt bring our cellphones or for that matter any thing other than the required documents, the security check took less than a minute.Once inside the lady (very polite) asked for the appointment letter and asked us to wait and sit down at the waiting area. After about an hour or so around at 10 am we heard our names being called and we reached the window. The man was an indian and appeared a bit stiff. He asked us to fill in the address column(US address) in our ds 230 forms, and i told him we didnt have a permanent address in USA as of now, but he asked us to fill in the name of the sponsoring facility, which we did.He than asked for a photocopy of the visa screen certificate and updated job letter. After that it was a a sort of a mini quiz for all of us. He started to ask a few questions to me an my husband regarding our date of births, marriage dates and daughters birthday. He even asked the name of my husbands grandfather, and i felt a bit embarrased when i diddnt come up with an answer.He then smiled back and said to go back and wait again.

We felt a bit hungry there and had a few snacks at the cofee outlet inside the waiting area( a bit expensive though). We waited for another half an hour and our names were called again. This time it was an american man(extremely polite), asked us to raise my right hand for the oath. Then he asked us to sign the ds 230 form part 2, i signed for my daughter.Then he asked me and my husband to put our finger in the machine for fingerprinting.

Then he asked me the following qustions

1) How long have been a nurse and where.

2)was i currently working

3)What kind of patients do i get and work with?

I answered all of them. Then he asked my husband what he was doing and would he pursue the same profession in the US.

Then he looked up and said" all the documents seem to be in order, you will get the passport by courier in a weeks time.. thank you"

I just couldnt believe it was over. By 11 am we were outside and smiling our way back home.

A very special thanks to Ms Suzzane who has been a guiding light through all these years that were spent waiting. I have been through two retros and one lousy employer .

Any way new chapter is beginning and we really look forward to do our best....

for all those waiting i know how it feels , but there is always a day after every night, how so ever the long the night may be........

One thing more he also wanted the evidence of passing nclex apart from cgfns original certificate. (thanks suzzane again here for reminding to take that along).I took the printout of the pearson vue account page showing the "pass" in that.:balloons::balloons:

Thank you for sharing this. There are several that have argued this point with me in the past, and I have told them that they will be asked to show proof that they have passed the NCLEX exam in many cases. Even more so when there have been issues in the past with a particular agency. The US Embassy is actually only looking out for the nurse's welfare, not to be the mean guy. We have seen agencies not even submit the application for licensure until the nurse is in the US, so that they do not have to pay them RN wages for months, and can keep you under contract for much longer. Most contracts state that the time of the contract begins when you have your RN license and can work as such. The wait time is not included in this.

case completed at nvc: october 30, 2006 and forwarded to new delhi

So glad to hear that you have everything in place.

Massachusetts is quite cold in the winter, you will need warm clothes but you will be able to ge them there. When do you think that you will be arriving in the US?

We were planning to sell off some property and our car and some other stuff so that we have some cash with us handy. We were planning to come in first or may be second week of september. I just dont know how much help we will get from the agency regarding relocation, but we need to get an apartment. Although i have some famly in texas, i wonder it is quite far from them too. I am hesitant to get an apartment on line but if nothing else we might have to do that.I have written an email to the agency lets see what they say.

Although there is a clause for medical insurance for the family in my contract, i do not know how soon i would start working and would it be wiser to get one for a limited time for all of us from here.

I am told that for taking loans ( to get a car or something)one needs to have a credit history, which at present we dont have, so i was wondering how do the first timers get their credit cards??

There are so many queries in my mind , i guess it will take some time to get all the info.

It would be nice if you could make a checklist for the new immigrant addressing such issues since you have a vast experience with nurses and problems they face initially, so that things get easier for the new immigrant.

If any of the other nurses too are at my stage it would be nice to get some feedback from them.

There are actually a few threads on this forum about establishing credit here for when you first arrive.

We did have a sticky sometime ago, but the info in it became outdated.

I will add your suggestion to my list of things to get done.

As far as medical insurance, check first with your agency. Insurance for the US is quite expensive if you need to pay it out of pocket.

September at least still has warm weather there. Winter weather does not start until end of October when it starts to get cold. A sweater will be just fine for places that have high air conditioning on.

As far as housing, check again with your agency to see what they have in place, if they do have anything. I like using www.rent.com to check out apts in the area where you will be. You can put in the zipcode of the facility where you will be and it will give you everything in the area. Also check out the link that we have on the Philippine Forum in a sticky to check out the crime stats in the area where you will be to let you know which areas are safer than others. Would start with that first.

You may also wish to post something on the Massachusetts forum to get input from members that are very familiar with the area that you will be in, that will help as well.
