UK trained mental health nurse

by Obansu

Hello, has anyone gone through the registeration requirement for a UK trained mental health nurse who wants to work in the US. I am a mental health nurse with Masters degree trained in the UK, I understand I need to do some top up courses in general adult, peads, and midwifery. Can anyone advice on BON and CES requirements for UK trained mental health nurse. Cheers, Isaac

Each BON is different in their requirements. CES is a breakdown of your transcripts and then the BON makes decision on whether you are eligible or not and if not why. Unless Ca would recommend yo apply to the state you plan on working if Ca then we do not recommend it for initial license and much has already been written on why

We have had a couple of mental health nurses meet BON requirements without making hours up. If you do need to make hours up I believe there is only approx 2 universities in the UK making hours up and there should be a sticky in the UK forum regarding this (may be under the sticky mentioning consolidation of stickies)

Also be aware of retrogression as you will be affected

Thanks, I am aware of all the visa requirements and retrogression, however I want to know about previous experiences. How mental health nurses trained in the UK were able to through the registration process. Where they made up the hours.

We haven't had many mental health nurses post on here but the ones that did, did CES and found they had enough hours. You may find it hard in the UK to make up the hours, may want to consider seeing if you do have to make the hours up on trying nursing schools in the US as a guest student just for the hours required

As I said previously it all has to do with your transcripts and what is on them. Until you do that and apply to a BON then you will not know if you meet requirements or not. US training is general and therefore your training has to meet the same requirements RMN as it is will not meet requirements unless your training also had hours both clinical and theory in Paeds, General adult and midwifery

There is a thread in the UK forum discussing this but I think you will find there are not many universities offering this service. May have to consider alternatives like guest student in another country that does offer a service
